Went over to the dark side...

So, where you looking for a phone or a camera? Based on what impressed you it seems a new digital camera would have better satisfied you. You gave up a lot for picture quality.

Here is what I look for in my phones (coming from various BB's to Droid X with a brief 2 week trial of Thunderbolt (hated UI and battery died before 3pm so sent back) and 2 week trial of Bionic (much nicer phone but random reboots, hissss in headphones, etc so sent back). Ordered from most important to least.

1) Battery life to get me through my day (8am to 11pm) of moderate use
2) Gmail, Gtask and Gcalendar integration
3) Nice, colorful, bright and big screen (preferrably one I can read outside too)
4) Customizable screens (I have 9 on my Droid X). Love all the cool widgets. Like flexibility...
5) Camera good enough to post on social media AND print as 4x6 (low light especially because I go out at night mostly).
6) Sound quality of phone
7) Sound quality of music
8) 4G

Forget something? Not sure.

4. barely
5. definitely
6. yes
7. yes
8. Heck no

I was in a VZW store today looking at the RAZR and Rezound. My iPhone friend was with me and he was desperately trying to convert me. :) I kept saying no with a smile. I told him I can't bring myself to do it, because honestly I hate iOS. It's not friendly enough, or customizable. He didn't agree, and I respectfully agreed to disagree. I just can't stand Apple's software, I feel too closed in and strapped down to one piece of software that controls everything. Can't stand that. That's what's great about Android, you can pick and choose how you manage you're phone and everything on it.

I know this is a GNex board but I thought I would post my first impressions of my very first (and likely last) iPhone while we all wait for the Nexus to come out... I just got the 4s, which I will gift to my DD as a Christmas gift once the GNex comes out. It BETTER come out before Christmas. Just sayin...

1) The phone is DARN heavy. Heavier than my Droid X. And very, very thick. Hmmm. Not a fan.
2) Screen really is just waaaay too small for my liking. Going from the Droid X to this is painful. That said, the resolution, color and overall clarity leaves my Droid X in the dust. I would say though that it's comparable to the Razr I tried at the Verizon store, maybe a tiny bit better.
3) The interface is like staring at your app drawer 24/7. Super boring and cluttered. Blech.
4) I really miss swype! Good grief. I had no idea how much I have come to like this method of typing.
5) I really miss the free android app of the day from Amazon! Not only do I miss the apps I already have but the idea of getting a great deal on one by going to the Amazon site each day and downloading.
6) Siri is fun and very accurate. I think I would use this often to add to my to do list throughout the day. This is the ONE and only feature of this phone I think I will truly miss when I get GNex. Very intuitive. No "code words" to memorize the way you have to on your car nav system to make it understand what you want.
7) The camera is amazing. It's also lightning fast, like the one in the demos of the GNex. Basically it shoots as fast as you can click on the button. Night time shots (kids dancing around in our living room while I took pix after pix) were unbelievably sharp and colorful, even in lousy dim lighting. VERY impressive.
8) I like how the status bar is a pull down like in Android (is someone suing Apple for this?) and it also is customizable to things like the weather, stock quotes...
9) Almost forgot. Absolutely NO Verizon bloatware! It is sooooo nice not to stare at Blockbuster apps!

So far, battery life is great. Much downloading and playing around, videos and pix of kids, etc (about 4h worth) and my battery is only down to 90%.

That's it. I know we are all waiting for the GNex but I thought a comparison from someone who has had BB's and Droids growing up would help some. That said, I am still totally looking forward to the release of the Nexus!

Oh, interestingly, DD, who is 12 and entering that "I wanna be hip" stage of development, is totally coveting the iPhone, even though I gave her my new Droid X replacement. Shows you how advertising to the right crowd will win you votes! She has no idea she's getting it as a gift. It's funny to see her drool...

Hopefully, you wiped the data on the DX so she doesn't see what moms newest post was about in the forum. I say that jokingly, but kids are really so much tech. saavier these days than their parents these days. Anyhow, this was a fun read cuz I just put my DX on a hiatus myself, and rented a Rezound for a little bit, at least, til I get some hands on time w/ a GN. I didn't realize the weight difference of the iphone & DX. Learn something every day, I guess.

I didn't realize the weight either. It's HEAVY!

I LOL at this. Every time I look at my buddy's 4s homesceen I chuckle to myself. I don't say anything cos he would get annoyed. He is total apple.
But yeah those icons plastered all over the screen is major boring.

I liked your review, it was seemed very honest coming from a Android fan.

.

Never heard someone refer to an iphone 4/4s as very very thick. Heavy for its size? Yes. But never thick. You are aware its thinner then your droid x right?

I have switched over to the dark side myself. So far I dont regret it. I consider myself a basic user, the first thing I did to my D2 was strip all the widgets off of it. Face it they are just active short cuts, the real info was always sitting behind them anyway. Installed Lightning Launcher and set the home screen and app drawer to text only. The phone was super smooth and fast like this, you all should try it. After the GB update a few of my fav apps started FCing so I decided to move on for now. I really don't see how ICS will help with app compatibility, it fact it may be worse.

Great review! FWIW, the iP4S's only failing is the iOS UI - because it is stale, not dysfunctional. The camera, apps, and Siri seem to be better than most expect. I wonder how Apple keeps expectations low...

I too am waiting on the GNex but wonder how the user experience - not technology - will be better than the iP4S. I don't want to have a worse user experience just because of my aversion to the stale iOS UI...

Every time I talk myself into liking the iPhone I think of iTunes.....I hate iTunes....

Ok, only temporarily, but I went to the Verizon store tonight because my Droid X chose to die tonight (well, apparently the WiFi antenna did). Looked at the Razr (very cool design, gorgeous screen, very light and thin, HORRIBLE camera, Bionic-like hiss on headphones between songs). Also looked at the HTC device (great screen, bulky, hate Sense, nothing new or exciting). When the sales rep heard me gripe about the camera on the Moto devices, she told me to look at the iPhone 4s. I laughed and said, no thank you, not for me.

So she dragged me kicking and screaming and I looked and took about 10 pictures and HOLY COW, that camera is nicer than my $300 Canon point and shoot! Screen on the iphone is also gorgeous. So, between needing a new phone suddenly, the GNex drama/delays today and the iPhone being right there, I succumbed and upgraded. But not without getting a free case and waiver of my $20 early upgrade fee. ;)

Never fear, GNex fans, the dark side is only temporary for me. As soon as the Nexus comes out (whenever that is, DOH!), I am going to pass the iphone down to my DD, who will be ecstatic, and take her upgrade to get back to my beloved, highly customizable Droids. In the meantime, I have a new phone to play with and I will get less of a heart attack reading the "when is this phone finally being released" threads on this board. Win win for all.

Katherine

PS: lady at store had no idea what ICS was, when GNex was coming out (never heard of it), etc... She did however agree to replace my Droid X under the warranty so at least I have a brand new refurbed phone to sell for a little money back. Also, she told me they heard TODAY about another Samsung phone on sale (on line only) with ICS but with a smaller screen also. Forgot what it was called but they didn't have a demo and small screens (I think she said 3.5") are not my thing in general.

Jason, the T-mobile manager at the local store, never heard of it either. The MANAGER!

+1 on that. I cannot stand I-tunes.

I have an I-phone 4 (work phone). For those NOT technically inclined, it would probably be almost a perfect device. I like to tinker, so it's not for me.

I might buy a used iphone 4s in the future but for now I'm sticking with my rezound

itunes is like a virus.. maybe it runs good on a mac but its a pathetic piece of software from my experience.. and somehow can shutdown a top end gaming pc from its resource hogging.

I picked up a RAZR to use in the meantime and so far I'm loving it. Even though I'm sure the iPhone 4S is a great device, there was no way I could leave Android even for a couple weeks. In the end, I may keep both the RAZR and the Nexus so I can swap back and forth between the two of them.

I absolutely love Android, but I love smartphones in general. I've had Blackberry, Android, and Apple. I was so excited about the Gnex; but honestly, I'm quickly losing interest. So much that I'm about to use my renewel on the Rezound or (GASP) I may even go back to the iPhone.

The biggest thing stopping me from going back to Apple is iTunes. My question is, if i jailbreak the 4S, can i still you the Amazon Appstore? Google Music? Etc.

ITunes makes me livid. Where do you get off telling me what I can do with my music AFTER I buy it?!

Amazon AppStore is android only... so no, definitely not. An I have no clue on Google Music because its so new.

I was also thinking about switching over and get the iPhone 4S, but passed.
I use DropBox on daily basis. I was annoyed that I was unable to edit none of my DropBox files. I could only view them. There were a few other apps that I use on Android, only to find out that the same app for the iPhone was locked down. They seem to be very strict on what you can download & upload to and from the device. If it wasn't so locked down and had a slightly larger screen, I would probably have the iPhone.
