Android Central Question
I'm brand new to AndroidAuto and I'm trying to decide how important it is to get the feature integrated into a car, such as the 2017 Impreza. I watched some YouTube videos and ran the AndroidAuto app on my phone, and I see the various features it offers in terms of accessing the phone's nav system, call/messaging interface, media playback, etc. I see that it responds to the "Ok Google" voice interaction system for hands-free use without touching the screen.
I'm curious if the sole purpose of the AndroidAuto feature of a car is to run essentially the same app on the car's screen and nothing more? After all, with mere blue tooth or aux-in, which all cars have had for ages now, the phone's AndroidAuto app can already run its audio-out (spoken feedback, played music, etc.) through the car's speakers. Until recently, it might have been useful to take advantage of the car's steering-wheel "talk" button to initiate voice commands, but that usage is antiquated now that you can just say "Ok Google", and that voice trigger command can be handled just as easily by the phone as by the car, so the "talk" button is all but a relic as far as I can tell.
The phone can handle all the same voice command capability that the car could, and the phone's screen and interface are (from what I can tell) identical to the car's (except for a smaller screen), and the phone's audio-out can go through the car's audio system.
So, does AndroidAuto, when run via the car, add any additional *features or functionality* over running it on the phone? Or does it just transfer the exact same user experience to the car's internal screen? I'm not trying to "insult" AndroidAuto, I'm just trying to decide what's important to me in shopping for a new car.
Thanks for any feedback.
