I have tried both the HTC First (sans Facebook) and the HTC One (stock with Sense) -- the photos look almost the same in outdoor daylight (not the greatest, coming from an s3) and in low light where I can see the One looks better much better. BUT the reason returned the First was I thought I'd be getting better photos.

so that said I did post here to ruffle - rather to learn :-) any good techniques or suggestions?

oh and by "bad" the photos looks very pixilated on both phones (actually the 1st had some better shots over all in strong day light)

Make sure your zoomed all the way out. Just start taking pics and mess with settings until you reach a desired level of pictures for YOU. Everyone here has a different opinion as to what is a great picture and one that is just....good. There's just to many settings to play with but that is a good thing!

what are your camera settings?

i have my HTC ONE set to auto ISO and auto white balance. i haven't used the camera much, to be honest, but my pics are fine for a phone.

Pixilated sounds like you are using zoom as was previously stated. Make sure the zoom is all the way down and see if that improves things.
