I have seen something called "gestures" and sometimes I wind up with a screen that has a squiggle on it which I'm assuming is a gesture. There is also what appears to be a back-arrow and a "gear" like looking thing on the right side of the screen. Don't have a clue how I got there or what to do with them? Can someone enlighten me?

Gestures are letters or shapes you draw on the screen to access shortcuts. For example, google gesture search allows you to draw a letter and it will search your contacts, settings, music, etc for things containing that letter.
Or dolphin browser has a button in the bottom corner that if you press it, you can enter a gesture, like a forwards arrow to go forward a page in the browser, or the letter 'g' to go to google.

Sounds like you're in Dolphin browser, no? The gear is a shortcut to your browser settings (tapping the back arrow gets rid of the gear/toolbar) and gestures are hand-drawn shortcuts for bookmarking, going to a certain site, etc. There are a few defaults but you can set up your own as well.

Ok, thanks. Sounds like play-time for another day! And yes, I do think it's happening in Dolphin.
