What are the best messaging apps for the Note 9

So Textra working with gear S3? I used to not be able to use Textra because of that? But that may have been on note 7 or 8? I haven't tried it on the Note 9..
Yes it works on the s3 .that's what I have. You have to go into the gear app from the phone and then click notifications. Then you just pick what apps you want notifications from.

Textra is the bomb. IF you don't need to see I incoming messages on your smart watch. If you do I'd stick with the stock Samsung Message app.

I get notifications, can view the message and reply, with Textra, on Gear Sport, Ticwatch E, Fossil Marshal Gen 2 and Explorist Gen 3.

Does Textra sync messages when changing phones? If not, is there a option at all?

Thanks for the reply. I'll try it again.

Starting with Textra version 4, Google mandated that several cool features be removed, namely individual notifications icon colors for contacts. Textra's fix was to include different shapes icons, but still the mandated white, that can be chosen to signify different contacts.
If you want the different color notification icons for individual contacts, side load a version lower than 4,from an apk site and don't update.

Not that I know of, but if I want to move texts, when changing phones, which I used to do, often, when I had five phones at one time, I use SMS BACKUP & RESTORE.
It moves calls and messages. It's best to do each separately. It seems to hang, if I backup both at the same time.

Thanks. Syncing texts needs to be as seamless as other messaging apps like Whatsapp, Viber etc using Google drive for backup.

Textra is especially good if you need to text Contact Groups. I've tried them all, and for sending texts to Contact Groups, Textra is by far the best.

Sorry I was incorrect. I haven't tried google assistant reading them. Only android auto. I was confusing the two at the time of my reply.

Same here - I always use SMS Backup & Restore. It does everything perfectly and I always use it when moving to a new phone.

I have used Textra for a very long time and it's my favorite, but lately I've been playing around with Mood because the animated emojis are sort of fun. LOL

Are there any messaging apps like textra where you can set a different notification icon per contact? I like the icon more than doing a ringtone per contact. That's the one feature I wish the Samsung app had. Ive tried chomp, Google messenger, mood, handcent, Verizon messages , and Android messages.

I'm like you and highly irritated that they changed that. I'd rather have the custom SMS tones than the custom ring tones. I've heard though the forums that there are several apps that will do the custom text tones. I ain't found them. Like you, I've tried Textra, Mood and a few others. All of them don't have that feature. The reason is, custom text tones were assigned in the contacts app. Google or Samsung took that feature out. By removing the custom text tones, no one can assign custom tones. Now people will argue saying that you can assign tones to the thread and that's just as good. No, it's not. By signing them to the thread, you can never delete that thread. If you do, no more customization for that thread. So I have to maintain every thread I've had to maintain any customization. Sorry, too OCD for that. Additionally, it don't work for group messages. You get a tone for THAT thread not that person in the group.
Yeah. Sore subject for me. I'll get down off my soap box now. LOL

Brad, I'm using Mood and I can set custom text tones for all of my contacts. I was annoyed that it was removed from the stock app, too which was why I switched to Mood. Haven't had any problems.

I don't use the customer tones anymore. I didn't even miss it when they took it away. Lol I like being able to look at my phone and see a custom notification icon. right now if I get a text and the icon is a heart, that means my mom just texted me. Textra allows me to do this , but I wanted to try another app with the same ability.

Hmmmm. I downloaded mood and tested it. The only thing I could see about custom text message tones read identical to the standard Samsung app. Tag the message thread and not the person. I tried it for several days before I gave up. What about group messages? If I have a tone for person A and a tone for person B, do the tones populate through during a group text message?
