Hi guys, I just ordered one of the refurbs for $139 today. I'm still reading through everything so I'm sorry if this has already been addressed. I don't have it in my hands yet, but from what I have read so far, one of the things I want it for most, HBOgo, won't work without it being rooted. I was wondering if I root the Fire will it still function as a "Kindle Device" so that I can get my magazine subscriptions and read books through the Kindle Lending Library, or it will it then be viewed as any other mobile device?

The only thing I could not do rooted was watch movies from Amazon. I could read books I bought but I admit I did not try the lending library or magazine subscriptions. I do know that you can root, make changes then turn off root using ota voodoo rootkeeper. At least you could before the 6.3 update.

What I didn't realize until I had a chance to play with this thing is that its not considered a traditional kindle. So magazines like the New Yorker still won't work on it.

Now I have to figure out how to side load HBOgo and I'll be set.

On my fire if I go to "Newsstand" and search for New Yorker the magazine is there. It seems to have horrific reviews. Perhaps its more of an app than a traditional magazine. I don't know the difference because I have never tried a magazine subscription. Perhaps I will give one a whirl.

What happens when Amazon pushes those updates out and removes the root? Do all the apps that were installed like android market and ones installed through them keep working? Or does it break functionality somehow?

All the changes remain and continue to work.

I can't speak for the stock rom cause I only ran it for a day, but if you do root the device you can replace the OS with something like CM9 or CM10 (both of which are mostly stable apart from some very small issues such as charging indicator (the device charges just doesn't show it)) you could definitely route a proxy through there. It's also my understanding that some oversees users have had to do this to obtain access to the extra wireless channels for certain routers as well.

Personally for those outside of the US I see little point in running the stock rom cause you are going to have to either proxy it or similar in order to have full functionality; without the lending library or prime video service the stock OS has very little going for it in my opinion.

I wouldn't recommend a kindle for someone outside the US. The Nexus 7 would be a better bet. However as you already have one I would add this advice. The reason to have a Kindle is for Amazon content and the OS. Once you change the rom you lose that and are back at the start where you should have bought a different device. With that in mind I'd add at the best bet is to keep it stock and any proxy would need to be outside the kindle, so it can attach to clean wifi and let a router or physical firewall handle all the internet issues.

I've tried just about every rom, from gingerbread to jellybean, and got so tired of the poor battery life, that I've gone back to the stock kindle fire... And excellent battery life again.
