Thoughts and Comments?

Im actually pretty happy that AT&T and Motorola are on the ball with updates. There have been 2 updates already for this phone since it was released and I can see that AT&T is finally living up to there words these days. Pretty happy about that.

Now the update. For me, I have noticed that the call quality does seem to have gotten better. It wasnt really bad before but it seems to be more clearer now with incomming and outgoing calls. I dont use skype or yahoo email so I cant comment on that. Now HSUPA has been unlocked and there sure is a noticible difference with it. Where Im at, the best Ive gotten was 3.4mb down/1.25mb up. The down part hasnt really changed but the Up part has which has increased about 3-4 times the amount it was before. Now people need to keep in mind that yes, the HSPA+ network is up everwhere with AT&Ts coverage. But you wont see fast speeds unless the backhaul is completed in your area. And only so many areas at this time have that completion. AT&T Wireless Network News for information on where its being deployed at up to date. So if you dont have backhaul in your area, you wont notice much of an increase. In all honesty, is that really a big difference to me? Not much so. As I am near wifi all the time and mainly use my wifi. Now heres what I will complain about.

The issue with Wifi being on, they said that there were going to be connection issues fixed with wifi and the network. That isnt much so on my end. The wifi still kicks out at certain times and leaves the phone paused for a little bit until the network connection kicks in to resume whatever process I was going through. It was like that before and hasnt been fixed for me. The problem with that is, luckily I upgraded to the 2GB DataPro plan. If I would have stayed on the 200mb plan, I wouldve been over charged as many times my wifi has kicked out and had to use the network for pushing information. That wont be much of a hassle though as for the time being I have been doing speed test and what not.

Onto my other issue. Im not sure if the Tegra 2 Processor is right for a phone. A tablet yes, as it works fine without "heat" at an extended use, on my Xoom. Its blazing quick on a cell phone, but Ive noticed the bottem area of the phone getting hotter quicker now and that really bothers me. I can understand if a phone gets hot after awhile of constantly using it but it shouldnt get Hot so quick like it does. Thats not really comfertible for me. Im sure they cant stop this from happening. Other phones Ive owned have never got hot so quick and made it become a hassle for me to the hold the phone the way I want to. Again, Im starting to belive that having that processor in a small cell phone is not quite a good idea for right now.

All in all, Im ok with everything for the time being. I was a sucker for the Captivates Super Amoled when I owned it. Im gonna be looking into the Samsung Infuse 4G when that comes out. And Supposidly its supposed to have hsupa uncapped on it. Samsung is not as good as Motorola with there updates, but they dont lock there bootloader. And Im a guy that likes to have a bit of fun with my device. So Im definatly going to check that out.

Well, thats my review so far for the Atrix. Comments and opinions are welcome. Tell me your thoughts in general on the Atrix.

I like the update. I went ahead a rooted (Gingerbreak) and established sideloading (Gladenabler), and then went ahead and flashed GingerBlur. I plan on sticking with this update until the Gingerbread update rolls out. I really don't have any complaints. Yes, the phone gets hot at the bottom, but I can live with it. My BB 9700 used to get real hot too. Right now the Atrix does everything I want it to do. I will be glad when/if Motorola unlocks the bootloader, but only because I know it will allow for even more customization with custom ROMs. Since I'm not a dev, it means more to them than it does for me, but I still want it for them.

Just my $.02.

I agree that the sound coming out of the earpeace is a bit clearer. At least from my perspective. My Atrix does not get any hotter than other phones I have used. I have Adroid System Info running and it tells me that the processsor is clocking at about 216mhz 78% of the time. Its fully maxed out 6% of the time. So the power management seems to be underclocking the majority of the time. I am not in a "4G" area, so I have seen no difference in download speeds although uploads have gotten a bump.

I had read that this release was a combination of two updates (.75 and .83) and that battery life improvement should be experienced. I have witnessed no bump in battery life. This phone is a total enigma as far as that goes. One day I will have 55% when I leave work (unplug at 530 AM and leave work around 630 PM), other days it is down in the 20% range and my usage really doesnt vary that much. Im really shocked that with a stock battery as big as the Atrix and with the CPU running at a very low speed most of the time, that the battery life is not better.

Also, the browser delay is still there which was a disappointment.

Oh and I have not had any issues with the wifi dropping out. I use wifi at my house and it has always been a solid connection.

Other than that the phone is amazing.

I'm happy as can be...i wish i would have known i'd have these speeds before i re-upped with sprint last fall with my data card. But I'm happy as can be with speeds and the phone

Funny i keep hearing about the phone getting hot at the bottom.Mine isn't getting any hotter than before the update and now im running it at performance mode and using it alot to check if the improved battery life was hot air or truth.
The battery life did improve im still runnning at 10% from my last charge at 1pm yesterday so im pretty surprised after all ive been online downloaded played games talked and so on and so forth. The phone gets warm but its the same as before the update, and before i used to keep it on custom battery saver to stay on one charge through the day.
I agree that maybe the processor like this one is still too much for a tiny device like this but it is the reason this phone is worth even getting.I hope they decide to unlock the bootloader since it would be awsome for us who want to DL more stuff onto the devices.

I installed the update and then ran gingerbreak. well it broke my phone. I had all my apps on the sd card. it wiped the sd card and i lost them all. I was a able to install all but the Quickoffice that came on the phone. i can only find it to purchase for like $7.99 and one have a copy of the one that came on the phone i could download. Other than that not real speed gain here in Houston tx.

The most noticeable difference with this new update would have to be the data speeds. I was constantly getting 550k down and 150k up before the update. I am now consistently in the range of 2.5m down and 1.0m up. However, this is of little significance as I am on wifi 95% of the time. I have also noticed the battery life to be somewhat inconsistent. I would guess that is jas to do with what apps i have running...yesterday the speedtest app killed 40% of my battery in less than an hour. Overall I am still very impressed with this phone (not even comparable to my old BB 8900).

AT&T's network is really busted in the NYC area. Last night after the update I was getting 300kbps down and 1.8mbps up. So I guess it's cool they fixed HSUPA but I rarely need that much upload capacity.

Otherwise the update hasn't really done much for me. I still get random restarts, the transition from Wifi to H+ is slow (10+ seconds) or sometimes non-existant. I really do appreciate that Motorola is pumping out these updates but wish they'd actually do something.

My fingerprint reader seems to be non-responsive sometimes. This started happening after I installed the update. The first update that Moto released increased its accuracy, but this update seems to be have made the overall functionality worse!

Terrigno, do you know if the backhaul is deployed in Raleigh yet? I couldn't tell from the map in your link.

Thanks

Im right down the road from Raleigh. They have an article saying there going to deploy the backhaul and a lot more cell sites around Fall of this year. If you look on that page, go to the right and click shore more stores, or feeds. And keep looking and you will see the part where they talk about Raleigh.

No change in DL/UL speeds. Actually, it's consistantly a little worse, now.

No change in the "muffled voice" issue.

WiFi always worked great in my Atrix, so this was not a concern.

There was never a heat problem with this phone.

Battery life was always good.

There were no benefits from this "update" for my Atrix. Glad to know it helped others, though.

Good news is:
1) I now have a buyer for my Atrix, so I'll be moving on, just as soon as I've decided what device to upgrade to.

2) I know to NEVER buy another Motorola product!

I don't notice any differences in:

- heat (not abnormally hot)
- battery life (still pretty bad)
- handset speaker performance (though it was fine before)

I did notice a difference in faux-4G connection speed, but I wouldn't have noticed it if I wasn't watching closely (due to reading threads about this update).

Coming from the iPhone 3GS I'm still quite happy with the increase in processor speed more than anything else. And the screen resolution. And Android's customizability in general. The only things I miss are a couple apps that I haven't found equivalents for. But these gripes/compliments, of course, are not related to the update.

like the last couple, no discernible differences. It's been fine in all things from day one.

Apart from the HSUPA fix I see absolutely no difference in performance or anything else.

I'm looking forward to Gingerbread and hopefully there will be a complete overhaul of Motoblah

I still don't even have the update. Tired of prompting it to see every day. My phone's running fine (except for the market ever since I had to flash the sbf file to restore my phone), and my 1st atrix had a severe heat problem before I swapped it for this 2nd atrix, so I'm a little scared to update if it causes another heat problem. That **** was HOT before.

Only difference I've noticed on mine is a much faster ping compared to prior. Upload and downloads stayed pretty close to what they were before. Download might be a little more but that's hard to say since I've only done that test a few times.

Ping went from 500's to 80-100 so that was a huge improvement when browsing and playing a few of the games I play. Not a small change, that was a big one.

after having the update on my phone, the bottom of my phone does get a bit warm, but i sorta like the warmness of it. strange, i know. haha. everything is working better now. I can actually surf the web without wifi on. finger scan is still responsive, no change for me there.

Skype, me no use so me no have saying on it.

however though, i didnt notice a major speed difference until i switched my APN from AT&T US (my default) to AT&T US HSDPA.

the highest download i got was : 3537kbps
upload was : 1103kbps
with a ping of 360ms
the closest tower to me is about 107.31km away.

Ended up doing a forced reset of my phone since after updating, it was doing some strange continuous low-level data transfer. It was a constant 5-7kbps up and 3-5 down. Strange and kinda started getting the idea it was a worm or something since I ended up deleting nearly every app and it still continued.

Anyway, after restoring the phone, last night I was getting ping times of 3-10ms?! That was consistent and I confirmed Wifi was off. (In fact, with Wifi on I was getting 20-30ms pings.) Too bad D/L was only 800kbps. U/L was 3mbps.

Well the phone does get hot quickly and it feels unsual and somewhat uncomfortable to hold it, but im kinda getting used to it.... I mean as long as the battery stays cool that shouldn't be a problem... And also not everone has this issue anyway...
btw I did notice that data radio drop after turning off wifi was fixed with this update so thats an improvement.
