This will be my first Android, so aside from the obvious (Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, ect...) What are your must have apps on your Galaxy Note 8?

the usual adobe apps are always a must for me, along with Any.do and Cal (wonderful calendar and reminder apps), dropbox, dropsync, sms backup and restore, my cookbook pro, quickpic for my gallery, silent boot, textra, and of course, swiftkey.

eta - password app and...

haha that's the first thing I turn off. I don't care for ads.

I use pretty much the same apps on both iOS and Android, but there are a couple that I prefer on Android and are on all my phones. The first thing I download is Swiftkey to replace the stock keyboard. I use Allo with my kids as they have iPhones, but love using Allo for messaging. A number of other common apps, but those are the couple that get downloaded first.

AquaMail to replace regular email (and merge all email accounts to one inbox)
Nova Launcher (and Nova Prime) to get a more customizable launcher
Any password app (I use aWallet Cloud Password Manager)
Swiftkey or Gboard to replace regular keyboard
Whatsapp so you can send videos (and all MMS) at full resolution

+1 For Nova Launcher. There genuinely isnt another launcher that maximises the android platform's user interface as well.

It's essential for all Android phones IMO.

Radarscope and Wi-Fi analyzer. I don't use any social media except for Facebook messenger and Twitter as a basic news feed.

My password program, NoteEverything because I've used it over four different phones and have a lot of notes in it, Tarot Cards, Next Bus widget, Wells Fargo app, and FB reader, a free really good ebook reader.

Is it sad that the first app I download is the BlackBerry Hub?
For the longest time, I refused to leave my BlackBerry behind. I had one until the BB Passport! Then BlackBerry Hub (along wiht other BB apps) came to Android and that's when I made the move to Samsung. I went through 7 and 8, and now have the Note 8. I think I'm gonna stick to the Note series for a long time.

Lots of these are personal favorites that are context specific for my hobbies so they might not apply to everyone, but I've used them on several platforms now. I research and A/B a LOT so these are the best I've found for me.

Launcher: Nova Prime (note - I'm still using the stock Touchwiz and it might be enough which will be a first.)

Sound:
Pitchlab Pro (guitar tuner)
Metronome Beats Pro
Napster (I have a subscription)
Achording (for guitar tabs)
Relax Melodies
Scanner Radio
SoundCloud
SoundHound
Cogi (voice recorder for work meetings)
Hi-Q MP3 Recorder (just bought new, first time, excellent)

Utilities:
S.S.E. (password vault)
Simple Date Calculator (work related)
Cerberus (security - ability to track/wipe phone from any PC/phone if stolen)
SMS Backup+
TeslaUnread
HD Widgets
Fitbit
Droid48 (HP RPN calculator)
Fingerprint Gestures (manipulate your fingerprint scanner)
Zedge (notification/ringtones)
Llama (auto phone programming)
Wave Control Pro

Other:
Kelley Blue Book
Simple Loan Calculator
Stock Watcher
Amazon Shopping
PayPal
WeatherBug Elite (favorite weather app - I've tried them all)
NPR News
WMUR (local news for me)
Outlook (preferred email app)
Tapatalk Pro (forum surfer)
IMDb (internet movie database)
