What can I do without activating?

My friend gave me their Gear S2 watch, and I am going to be buying a Samsung S5 later this week (all I have money for).

I am going to be using one of those cheap prepaid services, and the watch is on verizon wireless. Can I call using my watch and send text messages without activating it? Like, can I use the speaker on the watch to make calls and can I use the messaging feature with it?

Right now, when I try it with my iPhone, it tells me the sending failed. Is that just for the iPhone or will this happen on the Samsung device too? Also, with the iPhone when I accept a call, it goes to my phone and not the watch.

Can anyone help?

I have the tmobile branded version, using it with verizon phone. It works like any other bluetooth headset. With android (not sure about iphone) just keep the cell network turned off on it (if you leave it on, it'll kill the battery in a few hours easy), and you can use it to make/receive calls via it's built in speaker and microphone. Like any other normal bluetooth headset, you need to be in range of your phone obviously. The non-cellular versions don't have a speaker, so that is where some misinformation comes from.
