What Catastrophic Failure Looks Like

So, this is by no means breaking news but I thought it was worth posting. Many people are aware that the Pixel 5 doesn't have the best water resistance properties with screen separation issues. This fact reared it's ugly head about 6 weeks ago when I decided to throw my Pixel into a ziplock bag and into my chest rig and wade out chest deep into the surf and do some fly fishing early one morning. To keep things brief, the bag leaked, filled itself full of fresh sea water and my Pixel took a saltwater bath for a good 10 or 15 minutes.

The only life that came out of it after this event was a brief moment of haptic feedback later that day. Fast forward and earlier today during lunch, I decided to do a complete tear down to see exactly how widespread the damage was. As you can see from the first picture, I was able to pry a portion of the Pixel 5's screen back with my fingernail. The last picture is the amount of salt and sand that I was able to shake out of the phone. Everything in between is cringe and a reminder at why tossing a phone into a bag of rice can be a comical prospect...unless you're looking to pre-salt your rice before you cook it. ;)

I repaired corrosion in water damaged devices before with mixed success using a toothbrush and electronics cleaner but never from salt water...that is the worst damage I've ever seen!

Thanks for sharing these photos.

Yeah, in my opinion, salt water is a true killer. I've had a lot of end users at work hand me devices and say, "I don't know what happened but my macbook won't work" and you know they're full of it once you pop the cover off and see all the red kool-aid hanging out on the mainboard that is mysteriously missing from the outside of the laptop, but i would have to soak everything in isopropyl and we all know that wouldn't do anything to bring it back ??????

Good luck with your soon to be new phone.??????
Thanks! It's been a wild ride being back on a Pixel 2 with about 65% the battery life it had when new. I see a Pixel 7 Pro in my future.

Oh man, that's just PAINFUL to look at.
It was painful and comical to peel back the layers!

It's amazing how well salt water can actually start melting things down. Some of that material you shook out is parts of the phone starting to disintegrate  Thanks for sharing the very cool autopsy :p

Yeah, the pitting was pretty wild to see. I reassembled the phone and I'm gonna hold on to it for nostalgia, or self deprecation purposes....maybe both.

How terrible! So sorry this happened to you. I imagine water would be bad -- but SALTwater is another battlefield, entirely! Hope you enjoy your new phone!

I’m guessing that, in retrospect, you have decided that was not your best idea on that particular day.

Having said that, I’m delighted that you got a 7 Pro out of it.
