what do so many areas still only have 2G service from T-Mobile? Will they ever be upgraded to 3G?

Money, and money. Time will tell. Hopefully they will. The plan is to phase out older technology over time and move more and more spectrum to newer tech. But who knows how long that will take. There are a lot of towers out there to upgrade! And upgrading towers cost money. I do believe they have a government deadline to do some upgrading or risk losing some spectrum. So no doubt change is coming, but that doesn't help anyone stuck with slow coverage now. They (and all carriers) need to fill in gaps in coverage too. 2g is better then no coverage at all.

You're not complaining about 2G while using an unlocked AT&T phone in a non-reframed T-Mobile area are you? Until an area is refarmed, only T-Mobile phones pick up 3G/4G signal. I'm in the same boat with an unlocked AT&T Note 2 I tested.

The manager at the corporate T-Mobile store is my wife's co-worker's grandson. I was chit-chatting with him the other day.
According to him, there is ZERO chance of 3G upgrade. 2G is all we'll get for the next 3 to 5 years.... then if we're lucky,
maybe upgrade straight to 4G. (very big IF)

Not true. All unlocked GSM phones that operate on the same 3G/4G frequencies will receive the same speeds as T-Mobile phones.

I think Patruns is right. I unlocked my Gnote and before I even put a custom rom, I was getting 4g LTE
