What do you go for: Brand or Specification?

Every year, the recurring complaint with HTC phones is that they might be the best in the world if only they ran stock (which is to say Google’s best version of) Android and had high-quality cameras. Well, that’s exactly what the Google Pixel is. It’s a new Android smartphone, built by the highly experienced team at HTC, augmented with Google’s best Android, Google’s timely and longer-lasting software support, and a camera good enough to surpass every other mobile camera on DxOMark. Now, I don’t invest too much trust in such benchmarks, but this paints a promising picture for the Pixel’s photo-taking capabilities.

Definitely a trusted brand. Specs matter no doubt. A reliable partner is always a safe option to fall back in times of trouble.

Don't really favor brand or specs. I do prefer well designed phones with unlockable bootloader. My last 4 phones have been the LG G4, Alcatel idol 3, Moto N6 and LG N5x. All were purchased due to combination of value, specs and design.

What does specification mean anyway? For a community that prides themselves on being the 'technical' ones, it always amazes me how people miss the point.

Battery capacity is a specification, but battery life is the metric; I don't give a damn if a phone has a 5000maH battery, the thing that matters is how long the phone stays alive.

Sensor resolution & aperture and stabilization type is a specification, quality of images is the metric; Same thing as above, don't give a damn what's on paper, I only care about how the images look, how frequently I get keepers, how quickly the camera is ready for a shot.

I can go on and on, specification sheets do not matter. Apple's iPhone 7+ has a 2900 maH battery and has the best battery life on the market. Samsung's S7 has a 12MP camera with f/1.7 apeture and takes the best low-light images ... Several other phones have similar specs but middling results.

Performance and build quality are far more important to me than a particular brand. As long as it isn't some fly-by-night company of questionable reputation, I couldn't care less. I just don't get how some people get hung up on specific brands regardless of the type of product.

For me it's always been about the best phone at a particular price point whether its a popular brand or Chinese one. I don't like to spend more than $150 on a phone so whenever the time comes to buy, whichever phone offers the best value at around that price is the one i get.
