What does a 'G' data icon mean?

traveling fronm Colorado to Texas, I saw this icon on the data section of the phone. It's a 'G'.

I first thought it was for 2g service, but I saw a 2g icon later in the drive.

Any ideas? I've also seen it on my son's old Moto X on t-mobile.

LOL that's most likely GPRS which is even lower than EDGE (2G). You can't do much in that mode.
