What does hands free mode do?

I hit the hands free mode toggle on the notification bar and it doesn't seem to do anything. I thought maybe it would read my text or something?

I think it reads your texts and emails and caller ID out loud... Volume has to be up though

After the kit kat update last week, my S4 now turns on hands free mode on it's own once or twice a day. I then have to go into settings to turn it off.
Anyone else had this problem?

In my Galaxy Note 3 and I have not downloaded updates... Several times a day the "Hand Free Mode" is turned on alone. And I have to turn it off. Any solution?
