What does mounting & unmounting sd card mean?

I'm new to the smart phones & I'm trying to learn these terms y'all have on here. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I tried to Google it that question was never asked nor answered. The mounting questions that are here do not ask specifically what it means...Thanks

Mounted: the card is integrated to your computer, phone or whatever and ready to use.

Unmounted: the card isn't integrated and can safely be removed, without causing damage.

As far as I understand it, "mounting" means the OS will read the SD card file system so it becomes awareof the contents and becomes in control of the reading and writing operations to it. "Unmounting" means the OS gives up control of the SD card so that other processes, like copying files to your PC and back can access the SD card.

I know it sounds a bit archaic for such a "modern" OS. Even my much maligned Windows Mobile phone I had before didn't require this mount/unmount business.

Maybe some of the more experienced Android/Linux members here can shed more light on this topic.

Welcome to Android Central! Did you read the previous posts in this thread? There is a couple of good explanations of mounting/unmounting. Sorry, but I'm not sure what you mean by "if my mobile phase this then, that time what can I do?" Can you rephrase that?

no, it just means you can remove the card, to put it in a reader or another device or whatever.
mount it again and the phone can see everything on it just like before you unmounted it.

Micro Sd sucks

Actually my Sd card first inoperatable ,doesn't even recognized in my smart phone or laptop or pc but then put it into my nokia X2 and guess what ,my memory card is accessable ,i have open view every file of mine in it and then i put it into my car music system and again it works but then i again put it into my laptop it accessable or operatable for a minute or two and then same ****t "Not Recognized" , "Pls Insert Disk" . WTH? can anyone tell me what to do ? i have very important data in it guyz need it badly .how can i get it back in my smart phone :-\

"Technically" if you use this option, you can physically remove the SD card. At the same time, you can "unmount" the SD card if you do not want to include this storage in your search options.

Yes same thing happened to me. I didn't physically do this myself. I went to access data on my SD card and my phone is not reading it. I'm now worried if I remount it or remove it to save to laptop before i remount it in my phone could I lose my data?
