What does sync actually sync?

In the quest for better battery life I'm going through all the settings. I can't find what sync actually syncs. Any ideas?

This is the master SYNC toggle. Think of this as your home's fuse cabinet. You have individual switches that turn your electricity ON/OFF to various parts of your home. Then there's a master switch that shuts off power to your entire home. This SYNC button is the master switch. Some apps require this to be turned on for them to sync. The only time I turn mine ON is when I have new Google Calendar entries that I want synced to my desktop Calendar.

Hi is there any progress on this? If I understand correctly ignore patters are the opposite - they define which files will not be sent out to other nodes. But I need to ignore on my device (laptop, phone) to exclude which subfolders not to download. Exactly as it works in Dropbox and their "selective sync".
