What does the "H" mean next to the signal strength indicator?

On Pixel using Google Fi, what does the little "H" next to the signal strength indicator mean?

sometimes I see "H", sometimes "E", usually neither.

No data connection while on the phone call. Basically you're not on a VOLTE call.

It is an HSPA signal.

LTE is 4G,
HSPA is 3G (though HSPA+ is 3.5G),
EDGE is 2G (it will display an E),
and GPRS is 1G (it will display a G).
