So far I have the one click root (heroroot010.apk)
the aospMod-v0.9.9.2-signed (froyo for 2.32.651.2)
gapps-mdpi-20101213-signed
rom manager from the market by clockworkmod
astro file manager from the market
mybackup pro

is there anything else i need for a successful root?

Nope. You are all set. Sync/backup before you start.
Run the root app
Install clockwork recovery with ROM Manager
Reboot into recovery by powering off, then hold home+power on
Make a nandroid backup in recovery (this will let you return back to a freshly rooted state)

Now to install the ROM:
From recovery, select wipe/factory reset
Advanced menu, format boot/system/cache
Install ROM from the sd card first, then the gapps file
Reboot (may take a few minutes)

This will get you up and running. Let us know if you need any help :)

thanks, after several tries i finally got it to work. it would always hang on the android splash screen on the froyo mod and hang on the gingerbread mod as well. i finally got gingerbread to work but i still want to try froyo. i just dont want to end up back where i was when it would always hang on the splash screen

If you hang at the CM7 boot screen then it means you probably didn't wipe everything. Remember to wipe whenever moving to a different ROM.

I forgot to tell you to Wipe Dalvik Cache as part of the process. Sorry about that. So you should wipe:
- Factory Reset
- Dalvik Cache
- Advanced Format System
- Advanced Format Boot
- Advanced Format Cache

That should give you a successful boot. Also, note that if you switch ROMs, i.e. 2.3 to 2.2, the phone may hang at the bootscreen for a bit. Don't worry, just let it do it's thing. Worse case scenario is that you pull the battery and reboot, which should solve the problem.

On every CM7 or aosp ROM I've flashed, the CM7/android boot screen has taken a bit of time to load. He may just want to put his phone down and wait, could be fine.
(If it wasn't for us posting here, the Hero forums would be D-E-A-D)

HA, yes it would be dead. The phone is still great and I'm actually surprised that it has lasted as long as it did :) I mean, look at XDA, the Hero is still going strong over there.
