what happened to my emoji?

I updated my galaxy s3 a few days ago and on my samsung keyboard there was a smile button that had a lot of emojis (similar to my old iphone) when I went to text a friend today the smile button was gone. I assumed the emoji was part of the most cure upgrade. My phone randomly shut off yesterday so my first thought was maybe it kicked out the upgrade. But when I checked today it said I had the most current software. Please help .

I'm not familiar with that phone, and it depends on what Keyboard app you are using, but try the key bottom left and the one above it, also the return key bottom right. Various combinations may lead to the emoticons, as I call them. Long-pressing the magnifying glass icon bottom right, if you have it, should give the option to select emoticons.
Excuse me for being vague....my cat is sleeping on me at the moment and I can't quite reach my Nexus 5, on which I've experienced that problem in the past, to check things exactly.
