What happens if I task-kill "Mail" "People" or "Messages"

Does this mean that I will not receive notifications of new mail or messages?

What about killing the people process?

Is there a way to manage what applications boot up automatically when I turn on the phone?

It will start back up using task killers are bad. You kill a app android restarts the app.

Agreed, do not use an app killer. Android will kill apps as needed.
