You are rooted but do an OTA update,

I would assume bad things would happen

Usually you will just loose root if you was still running stock rom but you can also experience a brick situation with some custom roms or if you freeze unwanted apps,, it is suggested to never do OTA without restoring to stock ro avoid bricking device.

I'm about to root for the first time, thinking about going with CM7. The pros of rooting outweigh the cons, this forum has been a HUGE HELP :-$

Remember to backup after root and wipe everything before installing roms like developers reports and you should be good...

Good Luck.

Oh yeah always give device boot time because after installing rom boot can take a few minutes, just wait and dont pull battery...

What do you mean wipe everything?

Most developers instruct users to wipe data, cache and battery cache which will wipe all person information and settings before installing to allow a clear installation and minimize errors..

Check out this video...
‪How to ROM: HTC Thunderbolt Das Bamf 2.0-5/2.1‬‏ - YouTube

Just use the part about wiping data and cache, follow developers instructions for the rom you chose.. You may want to read up more before starting and be sure you have this down first

Once you're rooted and ready to start messing with ROMs... You first need to make a nandroid backup just incase something goes wrong, you have something you can revert back to.
Here's a guide that will walk you through backing up and installing custom ROMs.
http://forums.androidcentral.com/showthread.php?t=77350
There's also some related threads posted at the top of that guide page for backing up and restoring apps which will save you a lot of time when setting up the phone with the new ROM.
As for your question on wiping... When you flash between different ROMs, there are three things that need to be wiped. The data, cache partition and dalvik cache. Everything is explained in that guide.
You may also not want to jump into any ROMs that are still in beta or alpha builds for your first ROM... You may experience some bugs. I would go with something more stable like Bamf 1.8.6 or any of the other Bamf Gingerbread ROMs. Then once you're use to flashing ROMs you can get more experimental and try out the other ROMs that are still being worked on.

wow thanks for all this info!!!

I will read it all before attempting the root

There is a lot of reading... but this forum has some of the best material... read the ADB rooting process before you attempt it... and the one by Cyber Warrior on how to backup/restore/installl a ROM.... some very good stuff there.

@OP, regarding your question, if you root and accept an update you'll risk losing root access. It's advised that you don't update and wait for the developer to release a patch/update with the ROM.

I think you'll have to use Gingerbreak. Try 1-click first then Gingerbreak.

rooting is easy. just follow the directions. then read read and more reading on what the best rom to your liking would be. i am on my 3rd or 4th ROM so far and REALLY liking the gingeritus 3D, could use a few tweaks but love it so far. some ROMS will have things that others wont.once rooted go to the market and get root explorer, use this to get rid of bloatware.

Gingerbreak is a one click for devices already running the Official Gingerbread 2.3.3 update. It will not work on the Thunderbolt..
