yeah, my wife uses a similar strap to make it safer and less tiresome to run with the phone in her hand.

I would suggest getting a case to apply the strap to first. That way you are not gumming up the actual phone with any adhesive residue. You can get cases that are pretty low profile if you don't want to add extra bulk.

Wow thanks for links!
I'm in desparte need of some accessibility hacks!

Supcase unicorn beetle case. I have had them on my last three phones including the 6p. They are excellent cases for providing a lot of protection without very much bulk. They also protect the glass on the back up the phone which I really like. I don't have to worry about setting it down on any surface on its back or screen side with this case.

I have this case and it is extremely grippy, doesn't collect dust/lint, and is very well made. Good protection and not bulky at all. It also has a plug for the headphone jack which is a really nice touch. And it has a place to attach a wristband or lanyard, so it would be impossible to drop if you had that.

I never thought about the phone's size giving problems to some people when they try to hold it. I got used to the size so quickly and I find all the phones small now. Lucky me.

Speck Candyshell Grip. It's not the thinnest case but its right in between thin and thick

Spigen Rugged Armor if you want it to be grippy.
Poetic Affinity if you want to flaunt it, along with decent protection.

I usually leave my phones naked, but I also had problems with grip on the 6P. I got the slimmest case I could find that looks and feels great IMO. I've tried a couple of different cases with this phone and I have had some in the past on others, but this is the best case I've ever used. It gives me the grip I need while staying slim enough for me.
