I have had the phone just a few days, but today was the first time I noticed this.
Recent installations include Swype keyboard and RockPlayer, and Astro.
I also think I tried an app for tracking flights, but I thought i had uninstalled it.

All text and menus are in Japanese, so I understand none of it

epst is an HTC system app (if you hit "about" under applications it will show you that)

It has something to do with the programming on the phone. (Electronic Performance Support Tool or something like that - was qpst on qualcomm phones)

I do not think the app in your drawer is related (just uses the same icon.

Well I googled about it and it seems like there's something about EPST to get droids to work on another carrier? I'm really not sure if this has anything to do with it though since I'm new to the android world and that EPST might be something completely different. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can chime in.

Yeah, I tried Google as well and came up with little to nothing.

Here's the app manager screen for it.

If you click 'about' does it say its made my HTC, because I have the same thing and its made by HTC. I don't have any japanese icon thing though.

From the picture above, it doesn't look like it is using any data. Probably safe to ignore.

my girlfriend has this on her phone in the task manager but not as a main menu item. Any updates on what this program is and why it shows in the task manager now?

EPST does a number of things. Namely it's what helps control the # programming codes in the phone to allow you to do updates to things dealing with the phones operations. Something that has to be there in other words.
