what is gTalk and what does it have to do with my AT&T phone

I never heard of Gtalk before I want to know why and what it has to do with my phone and why my boyfriend keeps having stuff pop up on his phone about gTalk and my phone and it's two different phones find the stuff for my phone is popping up on his phone how is that possible and what is it how can I figure out why this thing you sitting here telling stuff that ain't happening

We don't typically discuss what's going on with someone else's phone.

However, "GTalk" is the legacy version of Hangouts. I thought it was renamed by now but it's still the underlying protocol.
