Okay got my Xoom yesterday and i keep seeing the word "rooting" and "rooted" everywhere but have not been able to quickly find about Rooting and what it does or how to do it or why i would need to do it?

Maybe there should be a sticky thread for us noobs (i am a geek really) so if anyone can give me some advice and answers please feel free to enlighten me :-)

Edit. Okay just forget what I wrote above, I am a noob, I just found the threads on rooting lol.

Rooting is for the Android operating system like what Jailbreaking is for the iOS (iPhone). Basically, it gives your device "super user" access. Which means you can run specific apps or do things that the developers did not want you to do. Like using your phone as a wifi hot spot with out paying the carrier for that feature or to disable ads. I am sure there are many other reasons as well.

Personally I have yet to find a reason to root my Xoom, however I have rooted my Moto Droid Pro.

At the top of the forum is a subforum for rooting. It includes guides that are stickied on the top. The guide that might be a good read is : http://forum.androidcentral.com/xoom-rooting-roms-hacks/?daysprune=-1&order=asc&sort=postusername

That's the process needed to root. Root allows certain applications more access to your Xoom that can make modifications to the Operating system, like SD card support, USB hosting, quick screen shots, overclocking of both CPU and GPU, Themes and hopefully soon ROMs.
