What is the best current Android for the money?

I know this may be a rather broad question, but I have been having some issues with my Galaxy S3 lately.

My provider does not have the S5 in stock and I feel the cost of the S7 is prohibitive.

I am considering LG models, but unsure if they will feel like a step down from the Galaxy. Of course, there are the J series as an alternative as well.

Further, would I be able to maintain my Google contacts if I were to switch to an LG?

One of my main concerns is the battery life. I typically do not watch videos or have the GPS on all the time. However, on a recent trip, I needed the GPS and found the battery draining quite quickly. When not using GPS, on a typical day, I tend use Pandora and What's App on occasion.

In my opinion, the LG models are great phones. Had an LG G3, loved it....just loved the Note line more :-D
