What is the heat pipe used for on the G6?

Keep it cool to prevent the issues of overheating phones which led to bootloops .. would be my guess.

It's just used for overall cooling. It helps disperse heat away from critical components eg. The processor.

Helps keep the battery cool also. Jerry Rig Everything talks about this in his G6 teardown video. He used a thermal camera to show the difference between a G6 with a pipe, and one without.

I don't think so. Don't think it's supported because it uses an LCD screen instead of AMOLED which is the recommendation. You can buy a third party, made in China VR box which they sell online and retail stores. It utilizes the Google Cardboard app. Or buy a Google Cardboard... The previous G5 uses an external unit which was actually ridiculous and had terrible reviews.
