Updating to latest software

I have a htc one that was supposedly unlocked; I am on the virgin network but it is branded to,ee/orange. I have a sony smartband swr10 that I want to use with my phone but to download the lifelong app I need android 4.4 and I only have android 4.3! When I search for software updates it says none are available. What do I do?
I paid for an unlock code yesterday from a website which told me to put in a different network sim ( I put in an O2 sim) and then I would be asked for a network code and I should then enter the code sent. The phone does not ask me to,enter a code so I am well and truly stuck........please help as I feel I have wasted my money on both the smartband and the unlock code.
Thanks

If your phone was still locked to Orange it would not work on Virgin. So, yes, you did waste money on an unlock code.

Have you tried to update OTA via WiFi? Turn off cellular first and just run WiFi connection and check for update. But no root, custom recovery, custom kernel or Xposed Framework or your OTA will fail to install automatically.

If that doesn't work you may have to flash a new Firmware manually.

Re: Updating to latest software

Thank you for your reply. I am sorry for seeming a little confused but I am not familiar with the terminology you used. Could you please, if you don't mind, spell out for me in simple language what I have to do to get this new android version on my phone.
Thanks again, in anticipation.

An OTA is an Over The Air update and may come in to a phone (or tablet) in 2 different ways. The most common is via cellular data from the carrier. That happens a lot for branded phones. You said your phone was branded to Orange, but running on Virgin, yes?

Since your phone is not connected to Orange - Orange can not send you the automatic update file. Unfortunately, different manufacturers and carriers all have to inspect and approve updates. Ultimately they are the ones who send them out. That means your branded phone will normally only receive updates from the carrier it was branded to. Orange.

To defeat that... Try going into airplane mode... That shuts off the cellular radio. Now you are not connected to Virgin. Then turn on WiFi and connect. Somewhere you have good speed and can stay at for as long as it takes (usually 15 minutes or less to get an OTA). Go to Settings > About phone (or About device) > System updates > Check now (or Check for Update) to see if there is an OTA Update your phone can find from Orange.

However, you can not have certain modifications in place on a phone for an automatic update to succeed. Those include root access (or a rooted phone), custom recovery (like TWRP or Clockworkmod), a custom kernel (for overclocking or other CPU control options) or the Xposed Framework mod. If any of those are in place and you try to apply an OTA it will either fail and reboot you into the old OS version or cause issues like bootloop where the device tries to boot - fails - tries to boot - fails - on and on... Any such mods need to be removed or disabled first to apply an OTA automatically.

If that doesn't work you may have to flash a new Firmware manually.

I'm pretty sure you are not ready for that. If it comes to that, find an appropriate forum for your device and study some of the threads. I'm not sure which version of the One you have...

Re: Updating to latest software

I tried what you said but my phone just says 'there are no updates available for my phone'......guess I'll have to move onto the next step. Where do I go from here?

Re: Updating to latest software

Go to Settings > About Phone

What's the exact Model Name and Model Number listed? That will tell us exactly which variant of the HTC One you have for further direction.

Please do not post the serial and imei. This information identifies your phone specifically.

Re: Updating to latest software

I want to be able to get android 4.4 on my htc one, ee branded phone but I have absolutely no idea where to look for info or how to begin. I am nervous of trying anything that might render my phone unworkable. Has anyone any links/ instructions that I can follow please?

Also, how does one root an htc one? Simple instructions please as all these concepts are new to me. Thanks
