What is this giant black ring around the camera lens?

A glossy surface does not prevent glare. Have you ever tried to take a picture through a window?

It was just a theory. I'm no phone designer or engineer by any means. There must be some reason that the majority of camera lenses, phone or otherwise, are surrounded by black.

If you mean why black as opposed to another color, I'm guessing (no research on my part to support this hypothesis) it's because the color you see on a surface is indicative of the wavelength of light it reflects. If it were surrounded by red, for example, peripheral reflection might tint the captured image with a reddish hue. White or black would be most neutral, with black having the advantage of minimal reflection / opportunity for color accuracy error (whereas white would be reflecting the full visible spectrum - but subject to what 'temperature' of white light was reflected).
