you're right, I just looked it up, weird, I read you can't get rid of it if your phone is stock, but it's never been there before til I updated to JB

I haven't received JB yet mainly because I'm still on my DROID X (getting my GSIII tomorrow), but I read on this forum somewhere that the upgrade automatically turns it on I think. Merry Christmas!

It's not GPS, it's your location services. The update probably turned it back on. I've always had that icon because I leave the location services turned on.

EDIT: if you want to turn it off, go into Menu-Location Services and uncheck them all.

I read that it's an icon for your emergency services like being able to call 911. You can't turn it off. The location services icon I believe is a blinking circle.

If you play with the location services, what is on/off you will see this icon change. The square stays there, so it is probably the 911 location service so they can find you if you call 911. It is all related to location services though.
