what is this status bar icon?

Its in the icon on the far left of the status bar, I dont know what it is and cant turn it off.

To me, it looks as though it may be your GPS icon.. If you have your GPS on, it'll show this when there is an app asking for your location

On page 33, you'll see that the icon is GPS related, specifically, for 911 purposes. Access is by pressing settings > Location Settings > E911 (see page 144 of the above manual).

Unless you're rooted with a customized rom, it stays on all the time on the stock rom.

That is the E911 icon it is on all phones and cannot be turned off even if you are rooted. The only way to shut it off is to pull the battery out.
