What is wrong with the battery life on my P2 all of a sudden?

I didn't say it doesn't happen to other people, however before we can blame it on Google Home or Chromecast we need more information as to what else could be possibly be causing the issue. If we are going to use logic we have to look at all common denominators.

Did you read that link?

I'm seeing in several places that we should keep the battery charge between 40 and 80 most of the time. Seems a bit weird and limiting to me. Is this recommended even for the Pixel phones?

I have read that too. But I am not sure. Battery life seems a lot shorter only charging to 80%. It is like my mobility scooter batteries. I mustn't let them completely drain but I need to charge them fully each time I use the scooter. I don't let my phone battery run out but I do charge it to full and so far it has remained healthy and I get lovely long battery life. So I am not sure about the 40/80 thing.

I don't follow that process but I try not to let my battery discharge below 20 percent

All lithium ion batteries (whether in cell phones, tablets, laptops, or electric vehicles) have the most longevity when kept at a state of charge between about 20% and 80% and never getting too warm.

For example, my Prius Plug In battery is software limited (by Toyota) to never charge above 85% and never below 23%. This is also why Tesla recommends only charging to 100% only right before very long trips where you really need the extra range. Cell phone batteries are extremely similar to EV batteries, but it's not as practical to never charge to 100% in cell phones (but it also doesn't cost thousands of dollars if you need it replaced).

With the very generous size of the battery of the Pixel 2 XL I wish there was a way to only have it charge to 80% or 90% if we wanted (thinking for overnight where you can't watch the state of charge).

In my experience over the years this logic is totally bogus. And yes, I know battery Univ. and others say otherwise. Since L-ion replaced N-cad I have never ruined or prematurely used up or had to replace a battery yet. personal experience speaks volumes above and beyond what I hear on the web. YMMV, do what you like but just don't stress over it and enjoy your devices. Trying to maintain the 40/80 rule is nuts

Sounds like a great idea for a Kickstarter - a simple (Benson approved) charger with a cutoff relay, using BLE for communication, with an app like AccuBattery that allows you to control the charging setpoint.

True regardless.....and the Google Home products theory doesn't hold water. I've been using Google home alongside my phone since December with no noticable change in battery consumption whether or not I use it.

I've got a Google Home, a Home Mini and 3 Chromecasts (1 OG and 1 newer model) all on Google Fiber router. No problems with battery life on the two Pixel 2's in the house. We both work from home and are on WiFi 100% of the time while here too.

It seems as though the April update fixed my issues.

Glad the Google Home/Chromecast issues didn't affect you guys in March.

All I know is the battery on my S7 is hot garbage, and I used to top it off almost every day. I don't recommend doing that at all and have switched to a 40/90-ish routine.

Nice, how do you ensure it stops charging around 90ish?

Also the persistent notification is annoying.
You can turn the persistent notification off but unfortunately then you lose the alarm functionality when you reach the charging threshold. Blame Google - they're the ones that require this kind of implementation.
Edit: or, if you don't mind rooting your device you can try Battery Charge Limit https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.slash.batterychargelimit (I've got the Verizon variant so there won't be any rooting for me but it sounds like a great alternative to AccuBattery)

So yesterday was the first day in a week since I switched from the S8+ when battery life was decent on my Panda 2 XL. Standby time was great since I didn't use my phone much. Around 3½ hours of SOT with around 30% battery pending until 11PM with a total of 16 hours off the charger.
