What now?

"Please be reminded, we no longer require extensions in your agreement for calling plan changes. Additionally, data plans are features, and are non-contract bearing."

It means they can change your calling and data plans without your permission or altering your contract in any way. Let me say there is zero chance that Verizon would alter data plans for customers with active contracts due to the large amount of backlash they would obtain.

That's been the case per the finer points of the contract. Its true that they could in fact decide tomorrow that they would switch and not tell you its no longer available. They could even tell existing customers that their unlimited packages no longer apply and they are now tiered, but that would be VERY risky. If they did that, they would almost certainly face a class-action lawsuit, as directly or indirectly, they have led their customers to believe that their plans are for the duration of their contract, and that the ability to change them is a benefit to suit the consumer, rather than because the plans themselves are NOT actually locked in.

The worst they could really do would be to tell everyone they were going to have to switch to tiered plans, but give them the option to leave with their devices and no ETF. That wouldn't be a wise move, however, considering they heavily subsidize the price of the devices in exchange for getting you to sign the contracts, and they would lose alot of contracts that were just a few months old, before they had made their money back from subsidizing the phone. Not to mention the general loss of customers, and ability for all the other carriers to exploit that and draw more customers away would not be a wise move.

The smart move, and what they almost certainly are going to do, is to announce several hot new devices (Droid 3, GS2, and the Bionic) at the same time they announce tiered pricing. Keep all the current contracts through grandfathering, while getting many to re-sign, as well as new customers, from finally offering all the sweet phones they've been holding back from us right after the plans hit. That way their contracted customer base goes way up, and they show an uptake in data right after tiered pricing hits. Granted it will be because of the devices, but it will appear to be related to the switch to tiered, as earnings reports often contain data about plans, but rarely devices. That way tiered data looks like a huge success to the shareholders because of the cost savings and uptake in contracts, rather than being something that pushes consumers away.

That was what I was saying seemed likely about a month ago, after thinking about everything for awhile. That's what made me change my mind and decide that there was no way Verizon would launch the Bionic right before tiered hit, which is why I went ahead and bought the Charge with no regrets or fear of the Bionic being announced right after.

Make sense to anyone else?

Yes, It is saying that you are not protected by your contract with Data plan prices. Since thy went out of their way to point this out, it seems like they might be laying ground work to alter pricing on ALL data plans.

It would be a horrible business move to do so, and I have no way of verifying this email in the first place since it is from someone else's comment, but I did not like the wording.

For clarity's sake, I only want 1 of 3 possible responses to these questions, since it completely dictates my buying pattern/phone for the next year or two. :D
Either:
-Yes
-No
-unconfirmed

Background: I'm on unlimited 3g plan currently from a Moto droid. My upgrade is not until September.

1. Do I have to buy a 4g enabled phone, to be "grandfathered" into a "unlimited 4g data plan"?

2. Assuming I already had Unlimited 4g grandfathered. When my upgrade in September rolls around, and I am eligible for a subsidized cost upgrade, will my unlimited 4g data rollover into the next contract?

These two questions have now become the crux of my phone decision, taking precedence over last week's questions: "is the VZW-GSII going to be LTE?", "when the hell is the VZW-GSII coming out?" and of course "do pentile screens and webtop kill my desire for my long awaited bionic?". Frustrating questions, and a giant lack of clear cut answers, especially considering a ever shrinking time line within which to decide.

Heh i just looked at my statement on Verizon. My next upgrade is Febuary 2013 after i just bought the Charge.

Seems like lightyears away hahah.

Got training about the new data plans today. And as someone that sells this I can say wtf. They want us to sell more data well good luck. 29.99 for 2GB? And if you are on an exchange server get ready for another 15! I am pretty peeved right now. All my customers are gonna be angry and I am the one that has to try and explain this BS? Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Can you elaborate more on the plan?

Is it aloud?

I guess the question people msot want to know are, can they be grandfathered in on an upgrade? After the new plan goes into effect? And if so whats the cut off date to be grandfathered in?

Next question being, if the above is yes. Then if you can grandfather in, would going from 3G to 4G still be considered the same plan? I know the pricing is the same, but is the plan the same in fine prints?

If you already have the unlimited plan you can keep it as long as you keep upgrading to a smartphone.

The cut off date is 7/7/2011.

And yeah, on our end its the same unlimited data plan on a smartphone at least. Different pricing for 4G broadband cards etc. But on the phones like the Thunderbolt it takes the same data plan as say a Droid 2 so no difference there.

Still looking through the training but feel free to fire away any questions. I am on an employee account and may have to jump over now if I want unlimited. Lol

Then i suppose most people here have nothing to fear on tiered data. For now.

Only issue I can think of is moving from a Blackberry to a Droid or iPhone. Because the Blackberries have a different data plan code. So switching from those may try to add the new plans after 7/7.

I dont want to take the risk of losing Unlim 4G if I get a 3G device now. So the 29th, im getting a TBolt. I just like it more than the charge, idk why I like it so much. And hopefully in 2013 Verizon won't change their minds and allow us to keep our unlim data with our plan.

P.S. It's the first day of summer =] !

Thanks for the insight, much appreciated. Things are changing fast and it's hard to make a decision right now.

My problem is that my line only gets an early upgrade in January - the one with a Data plan. My mom's line is up for an upgrade, but of course, if I wait till the Bionic comes out and get it on her line, they'll want me to activate it there and sure as hell it won't be my current unlimited plan. I can activate it on another line, but what will come of it I don't know. Looks like if I'm to stick with VZW, I'll have to say goodbye to the Charge now and wait a few more months to make the jump.

Shucks.

Ps.: I hate summer :(

Ah, something refreshing!

WTF?!?! As if I didn't hate my Storm enough, now it might deliver one last F U to me with all of this crap. I was starting to relax and thinking I could just wait for the S2 as originally planned, now back to having to look at my various options.

Yah apparently there are alot of BB users here.

Alot of OG Droids also. I guess they are OK. Like Jasper and CK.

Fantastic news! No need to rush into picking up a phone I don't want just for the sake of getting locked into unlimited! For now anyway, ha ha.

NO!!!! Please tell me it ain't so!!!! I really hope you are wrong... My Storm 1 is barely hanging on. I have been waiting Since November for the Bionic!!!

We both hope and yet we both know the track record for Verizon. The Storm will get the last laugh.

Well in the training it did not say this. It said as long as you keep a smartphone. However I know in our system the BB have a different data plan. Perhaps if you went to the store they would push it through I just see it as a possible snag. Word for word in the training did not mention this I am just being cautious as I know how their PC systems work. It said existing "smartphone" users will be able to keep their plans. If you want to double check go to a Corp store and ask. They may say they can't tell you but in this day and age the info is leaked before I even get it.

Sadly it looks like I have to quote you too. I went back to my Curve 8330 after returning my Thunderbolt. Been trying to decide between the Xperia Play,Droid 3, or Charge. I guess I have to wait for an official answer about where BB smartphone users stand in regards to tiered data.

Geez..... this is some really bitter sweet news.
I'm just happy I made the switch from my ever failing Storm 1 to my OGDroid when I did.
I'm coming up for renewal next month, and just like most people I've got an Unlimited Plan, and I'm waiting for the Bionic.
Correct me if I'm wrong.... but everything should virtually stay the same if I were to get a D3, Bionic, or SG2, correct?

(Man.. I really need to get some coffee.. about to fall asleep at my desk)
