Ok so most of you i'm sure have seen me around the forums For better or for worse, im no expert but im trying to learn/help and generally be involved with the AC community.

So far i have rooted my fascinate but i have never attempted to flash a Rom.. why? well the fact is that i love the way i have my phone laid out now and didnt feel like starting over again. But i think unless i try to flash a rom i won't be able to help people like i want to help them at least in this area. i dont need to know eveything but i think i need to push beyond the basics.

With that being said, how do i choose what rom to flash im sure without trying them all i wont have my own opinion. But at the same time i dont want to flash every rom out there. there must be a couple favorites. like when we speak of launchers the most popular responses would be ADW or launcher pro.

i know that i want to be running Froyo so lets use that as a baseline..

So does anyone know what the best Rom out there is for my Fascinate is there a list comparing available Roms?

I appreciate as alway any help given

Are there any custom Froyo ROMs out yet? Even if there are, I would start at stock (rooted of course) Froyo, and use that for a while. That way you have an idea of the benefits and drawbacks of stock, so later when you flash a custom ROM you will know what improvements that developer has made to Froyo.

I think killahamsammich mentioned having one that runs Froyo.

There are no 2.2 ROMs out... I'm assuming you are stock DI01. The most popular ROMs are JT's Super Clean, and Blackhole... Both of which are available in ROM Manager

Either of the above will do. Super Clean is easy, fully functional, ready to rock. Takes away most bloat, I still removed a couple of things. Blackhole takes away pretty much everything and lets you add back exactly what you want. I would start with SC.

Be careful - don't install anything you aren't sure is for di01 rather than dj05. And I wouldn't touch Voodoo for now.

You've installed Clockwork and ROM manager?

I really like thatdudebutch's superdark rom. Its on XDA Forums. If you don't use things like any of the vcast or vzw bloat, that's my rom of choice. If you flash the DJ05 update his latest has the best boot animation I have seen yet to boot. After seeing all the voodoo issues, I steer clear of the voodoo stuff. Just my preference. Hope I helped a bit.

If you're completely satisfied with your current setup, your best bet would be JT's SuperClean, as it's the closest thing to a stock ROM as you can get. 90% of the bloat has been removed, but otherwise, by all outward appearances, it's stock, so you'll be able to reconfigure it to be exactly what you have now.

BlackHole gives you total control, but it takes some effort since you start with essentially a blank slate and have to add to it, piece by piece. And although everyone has different experiences, I noticed worse battery life on this compared to JT's (I get about 48 hours on JT's, and I got around 24 hours on BlackHole).

And just my personal opinion, just stick to the ROM for now... no need to flash a kernel at this point, especially with the DJ05 maintenance update and 2.2 on the horizon - no point making too many changes that'll need to be undone to receive the updates.

No Froyo. Just DJ05. I was running DJ05 Clean 0.7 that I got from IRC when the leak first came out. I have since switched to the new DJ05 Stock ROM from XDA. I feel it has more of the DJ05 fixes applied than the early version I had, and is a stock odexed file system so all the stock apps I want work. Deodexed versions for JTs gave me some issues.

As far as the OP goes. Blackhole is a little quirky in my opinion, but still nice with it's features. JT's will always be king for the aftermarket. I personally enjoy debloated stock ROMs a little more but that is just because I've had my phone that way the most. To get used to a system one way, then change to another, you will always find what you think are "flaws". If a brand new user flashed any other ROM right away, I'm sure they'd love it because that's what they'd learn.

If you flash the xda release of DJ05 stock, the dj05modem, and a DJ05 kernel of your choice (I love StupidFast v1.54) you will go through the same steps (in a little more detail than just using ROM Manager) as flashing any other ROM, and still have the same system you're already accustomed to and you will gain the knowledge you're looking for in the process. From there you can throw themes into the mix for a more custom feel.

I think this is the way i will go , i appreciate everyones suggestions. i think the most important part of doing this is for me to do the most detailed process because more than having a cool ROM i want to learn so i can be able to help others going through these processes. So i will prepare to do this and hopefully get this done on sunday , that way ill have time to fix any mistakes i make lol.

thanks Killa, kick @$$ as always

No problem. To follow up, if you're already familiar with CWM and want to learn ROM Manager a little more, you can flash the ROM zip on your SD card with that to see what it's like for people that download them with it. Either way works.

:D

All excellent suggestions for a newbie like me. Who by the way doesn't want to screw up again when trying to do this (see elsewhere). So I'm taking notes and making a list of things I want to accomplish/learn.

So in other words... I need to move the home office around a little bit and put a dresser in here for fresh changes of clothes? I mean I work from home mostly so it wouldn't be an issue for me and I can avoid public embarrassment :D. Just want to make sure I get a working plan in place for the next time I stumble into a wrecked phone that I caused lol. ;)

I tried out Blackhole, Superclean and Superdark ROMs for DJ05 and found superdark to be the most stable out of the three of them. I've been using it for a couple weeks now and it's been great!
