What should I do to receive Messaging app texts?

I have a LG G Flex. I'm experiencing two problems which are possibly unrelated:
(1) while running the Lyft (driver mode) app I don't hear the associated notification sound with incoming ride requests like I'm suppose to.
(2) three days ago I stopped receiving texts via my Messaging app, but I can send and others receive them.
I restarted my phone and force stopped most of my apps and then restarted my phone. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Lyft three times. I've checked all my volume levels several times and have set them all to MAX. Any help would greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to Android Central! Have you already asked your carrier about the messaging issue? Are you able to make and receive calls normally?

try deleting a few texts. maybe you have too many
