What version of Android

What version of Android is currently on the retail version of the G6? 8.0 or 8.1?
I see it will get updated to 9.0 pie in the future on Motorola's site. Have security updates been released often?

Google releases a security update every month (and releases it to the manufacturers a month earlier than they release it to users so that the manufacturer can release at the same time Google does). Whether any given manufacturer adheres to that schedule is up to the manufacturer's workload that month.

I bought this for my Mom in January. So far it's a good phone for her, if she would be careful with the apps she downloads. I had to factory reset it yesterday because I was not able to remove In Launcher. But that's not the phones fault.
Hers has 8.0 and Jan 2019 security update now too. It's a little behind my Moto X4 Android one that has 9.0 with March 2019 update. I hear that Motorola has a soak test for out in the US so we should get Android 9.0 on the G6 soon.

From my experience with Pie in my X4, I'm in no hurry for it to be available on my wife's G6.

the 9.0 OTA from the RETUS soak test has already been leaked and can be found on XDA.

I just found the release notes for pie on the G6 and g6play on Motorola's site by Google searching. The funny thing is their Android update page still states "pending partner support" for both. Also release notes say you need 50% or more battery charge and to connected to WiFi to get the update. So I guess it's not going out OTA over cellular data. That is going to be an issue for moms phone as they don't have internet or wifi at home and would have to go to a public WiFi to get it.

Has anyone seen the update yet?

And what issues are you having with Pie on the X4? I have really no issues with mine.
