We have 4 Sprint Galaxy 2 phones in the family. A couple weeks ago, my daughter's phone asked her if she'd like to update it and she indicated yes. After a the update her phone changed somewhat significantly. Her Android operating system now says 4.0.4 while our other three phones never asked us about the update and still have the 2.3.6 system. What's up with this?

First, Welcome to Android Central....

4.0.4 is Android (Ice Cream Sandwich) which is the most current officially supported OS on the SGSII .

You can always try under Settings/About Phone and select System Updates and see if that will force the update from Gingerbread 2.3.6 to ICS 4.0.4

Otherwise you may have to just wait it out and eventually it will hit your device as long as its complete stock and not rooted.

Paul,
Thanks for the fast reply and the lucid explainion. When I attempt to update the android system on my 2.3.6 phone, it says "your system is currently up to date." I'll wait it out.

Hank,

I forgot to mention, Sprint pulled the OTA (Over the Air) update to ICS 4.0.4 due to problems. So that is the reason why it is saying its up to date. Your one device was just lucky enough to get the update before it was pulled.

Don't worry, it will be re-released again soon enough after Sprint/Samsung work out whatever bugs they felt needed fixing. Just keep an eye on the SGSII forums here or the www.androidcentral.com "blog" page for news & updates on when the update is available again.
