What's the best ROM to use on Nexus 7 2012 WiFi 32GB?

Nexus 7 2012 WiFi 32GB running stock Android 5.1.1 that I received OTA.
I've done no mods or rooting on this device.

It's really slow as everyone had documented. I have done factory resets, wiped cache, not installed Facebook, etc. Still, it's too slow.

I'm ready to flash it with a better ROM.

I've read some good things about CyanogenMod on this device.

I have recently used Nexus Root Toolkit NRT from Wug Fresh to flash 6 onto my Nexus 6. So I sort of know how to flash using NRT and would like to use NRT if possible. I saw a video that it's possible to flash a custom ROM onto a Nexus using NRT.

Which ROM would you use or have you used to get your Nexus 7 2012 back to being usable?

Slimcat and changing the filesystem to f2fs will change it dramatically
