Coming from a BB i would, every so often, plug the phone into the computer and create a backup file of the phone.

What and how does everyone do here ? I have had my Fascinate for almost two months and dont really want to pay for a 3rd party app if I can help it. Want something safe and secure....

Unless you are rooted, you will not be able to make a full backup (including apps & app data). If you are rooted, you can use Clockworld Recovery to make a complete and full backup. You can also use Titanium Backup which also requires root. There is no free software that will do this for you that I'm aware of.

speaking of which, i have used clockwork mod several times (as i have flashed 3 different roms in as many weeks) and it is ok, but how does titanium work? i have the free version, but does it just keep the apps or is it a full image?

so far every time i flash a rom, i have to go thru app brain and spend an hour rebuilding my themes. which is getting old.

perhaps being a serial flasher is really not what i should be doing, but its how i learn. only force close looped of death once. first night i rooted...

Titanium Backup Pro allows you to backup your apps and their settings. It is the most useful app I have. (period)

So you've done a successful restore with it? I've always created backups with it but could never had one restore properly.

And for us non-rooters? I don't mind paying but would like advice on saving mail, text, notes, contacts at least.

If you're using Gmail or Exchange your contacts and mail are already backed up. Search AppBrain for the word backup and you'll see a number of free options for backing up text messages. Which app are you using for notes? If it's the memo app, I don't think there's a way, but there are lot's of alternative note taking apps in the Market that will save content to your SD card.

I have MyBackup Pro but have never had to do a "recovery" from it. I was rooted but had to unroot so this is the only backup I have in place.

Does Odin also need to be installed to use Clockwork recovery to create the backup?

Or just the clockwork recovery app alone to make a full backup?

Try Handy Backup for Android, it's safe and secure backup solution and absolutly free.

The best way I've found is either a nandroid backup for a full system restore or, My Backup Pro for everything but contacts then just export contacts to sd to backup and import from sd to restore.

Something else to consider... Make sure your apps' connection to Market is saved/backed up. In my first experience with MyBackup Pro the links were lost (so I would not be able to get auto updates). Had to restore all connections manually.
I switched to TitaniumBackup. No issues. And there's even an icon to indicate if market link was backed up.
