Whats the deal with the maintenance update

I was reading that some say not to except if rooted and some say its ok to except if your rooted but with stock Rom and Kernel. I haven't received the update notification yet but was wondering if anyone can shed some light on what I should do when I get the update. My vitals are listed below.

I see no reason why this should not be like the previous froyo OTA -- if you are rooted, that means you are running a custom recovery (clockwordmod, etc). In that case, the OTA won't work. You should get the notification if you are running the stock ROM and kernel (and radio), but accepting it will not work and could fubar your installation. If you want to get in on the update, you either need to unroot (stock recovery) or wait for someone to release a rooted ROM based on the update (and since there doesn't seem to be anything spectacular in this update, I'd just wait if I were you).

Thank you for your response. I have been very happy with my Dinc the way it is set up. This is why I have never tried any custom roms or kernels that have come out. The only thing I would like is better battery life but I can live with what I have.

You can try the Rom 'Virtuous 3.1" which is basically a stock rom with a few enhancements and all the updates you would have received in the maintenance update. If your happy with what you have now I know you will be much happier trying different Rom. Not to sure if you will notice any extra battery life doing so but there is plenty of other goodies in most of the custom Roms out.

I have never tried it but here http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-droid-incredible-roms-hacks/41558-roms-mods-hq.html is great list of Rom's, Virtuous is listed and the you can read up on all the extra's. Just make sure you do a backup of your current Rom before you start flashing. You might also want to look into backing up your app's there are a bunch of different apps in the market like Titanium Backup which is what I use. If you have any questions just ask

I have titanium backup for all my apps. I am installing virtuous 3.1 now via rom manager.

OOPs I just realized I didn't back up my rom like you said so I cancelled the download.

Yeah, ALWAYS do a nandroid backup fist, and make sure your titanium backup is current. Then it's hard to get too screwed up no matter what you do.... almost.

Updated to Virtuous 3.1. Everything went smooth but I did have to spend some time getting my phone set up to the way I had it (all 7 screens). I'm glad I had pictures of my screens so I could see what I had and where I had it. One question I have is should I upgrade my Kernel. I am not sure what it does exactly but I am always looking to better my phone so any input would be appreciated.

this is my main concern... I dont want to install the update if I will lose this feature...

I have everything stock on my incredible. When I get the update is it gonna wipe all my apps and stuff out just like Froyo did? That was frustrating trying to get all those apps back that I had! Thanks!

I will wait for the experts to update and give their thoughts on it.
Then they will let us novices now what we need to do to keep what we have and what will be gained.

EasyTether and "the trick to get free wireless tethering" are unrelated.

No reason to think EasyTether would no longer work. EasyTether doesn't rely on a vulnerability or bug.

And I see no reason why "the trick" would no longer work, either. People have been using that particular "hack" on Palm and Windows Mobile devices on Verizon for years (literally). It's not new, nor is it limited to just Dincs.
