What's the difference between "Smooth Motion" and "Video Stabilization"

"Smooth Motion" is under "Recording Mode" You can only have one or the other

Smooth Motion is Samsung's name tag for 1080p in 60fps. This is useful for fast moving subjects, think of a sporting event.

Video Stabilization is a software stabilizer that attempts to smooth out shakiness associated with hand held video filming.

UHD on the S5 maxes out at 30fps which means some stuttering will be present when filming extremely fast moving subjects.

I would say Smooth Motion will do a better job for fast moving subjects while UHD will work well with landscapes, scenery and other day to day activities.

Smooth motion would clearly give you the most fluid motion. For me these days I shoot everything in 1080/60p since the lifelike motion is much more appealing to me. My GoPro and Vixia cameras both shoot 60p so it's awesome now that my phone does too. Only caveat is low light shooting, in those cases 30p is better since it allows more light exposure per frame.

I recorded a video using smooth motion on my S5 active, but when I tried to upload it to facebook the video quality was not even remotely close to 1080p. Can anyone explain this?

I think Facebook compresses the upload. All my pics get compressed when I upload them. I think that's why they say that the camera on the HTC one M8 is ok if all you want to do is upload your pics to Facebook, instagram etc.
