whats this icon for?

it's next to the 3G icon at the top of the screen. It's a circle with two lines through it, kinda looks like a compass.

Whats it for, I've tried turning off various things to try and get better battery life but I can't find an option to get rid of it, if I should.

I think that's the GPS icon.

so that will always be there since there is no way to disable e911?

does it always try to acquire a gps signal with just e911 turned on or does it only when you dial 911? how exactly does this work?

Unless you have GPS on, it doesn't

If it is just the O with the + in it, it's the E911 location and it only locates you during 911 calls...

If it has the ))) symbols next to it, the GPS is enabled and will attempt to locate you when apps request it...

correct, and yes, it will always be there.

You can disable the my location in the settings if you want, not sure why you would want to tho.
