What's wrong with plastic?

I've seen numerous posts where people bash the use of plastic as the primary material in a phone. Most often this is directed at Samsung phones & compared with "metal phones" from Apple and HTC.

I can understand if you just prefer metal to plastic, aesthetically, but as far as function goes, the argument seems thin to me.

Today's plastics are durable, light and cheap. Many of today's most popular handguns employ plastic frames. If I can suffer the 9mm tucked in my waistband being primarily plastic, I'm ok with my phone being made out of the same stuff.

Plastic scratches easier and many times has a cheaper feel to it. Aluminum and Gorilla Glass do the opposite.

there is nothing wrong with plastic. just something alot like to complain about.

And aluminum do scratch

Plastic is great if it isn't done by Samsung. Go find an HTC DNA and a Samsung galaxy s3... Hold them both and realize they are both plastic.... and now tell me which one feels like a childs toy and which one feels premium.

People just like to look for stuff to complain about, and some people just insist on having metal phones.

This is from me, on my EVO 3D.

There is plastic and then there is Samsung Plastic. Has anyone held an htc one x or a DNA and said this feels like cheap plastic? The problem isn't plastic, its Samsung.

If you can understand that some prefer metal to plastic than why even ask? You just said you don't mind plastic, I'm not going to ask why. Some people like metal.

IMO; metal has a much better "feel" and seems premium.

Would you rather eat with a plastic or metal fork? (Chopsticks or fingers not an option)

It only feels like cheap plastic, but it isn't.

In my opinion, a metal phone would seem more sturdier than a plastic phone. But it would also seem heavier, especially since I put an otterbox on every phone I own to preserve resale. I don't want a brick for a phone. In that same note, I don't like all glass phones because of their tendacy to break easier. Its dang if you do, dang if you don't. Can't win for losing.

This is a form vs function debate, really.

Plastic isn't bad, it just lacks sturdiness, heft and the peace of mind that comes with spending hard-earned money on something made more like a car rather than a box of Legos. For a lot of people, plastic = disposable while things constructed of metal and glass trigger feelings of permanence. Kind of like the old glass bottle vs plastic bottle Coca Cola debate or the fiber glass vs metal car body argument.

Plastic is light, inexpensive and resistant to a variety of elements. Plus, it's malleable and can easily come in a variety of colors. It's not hard to see why it's prevalent, especially for someone who makes a ton of products like Samsung.
