Whatsapp - changing number and phone gives wrong backup

I would think that I could sort this out by trial and error - but with the "you have tried too many times" thing from whatsapp, I need to find a better way.

I need to change phone AND number and I want to keep my chat history. Following the instructions, I first change the number of the old phone - with the intention to then make a local backup, transfer the file to the new phone, install and activate WhatsApp there and restoring the backup.

But, already on the old phone, after the change of the number (validated by the code sent to the new phone), I suddenly get into a very old version of my chat history - I have no idea why.

So I try to transfer a local backup file from one of the last days (when I still had my "real" chat history), and try again to activate this on the new phone.

But now I have to wait 48 hours and I fear that maybe something will still be wrong there, increasing the enforced wait time more and more.

Anyone has an idea for me?

Thanks

Let me add that I am using the same google account on both phones and I have never used the google drive backup option.

I moved this to the WhatsApp forum for more specific traffic.

thanks - I really hope somebody can provide me with better guidance than the whatsapp "customer support" people did...

The 48 prescribed hours having passed, I was able to validate whatsapp on the new phone, and as I feared, it restored the wrong backup. So I would like to try again and get my full chat history which I know I have backed up. So I would like to try again, but probably next time they will impose an even longer wait...

Would anyone know what to do? I have root access to all the files on both phones, but am not sure which one I would move where without messing up things even further.
