WhatsApp is there any point to this?

WhatsApp has recently changed their privacy policies and said that they will share users data with Facebook so that Facebook can do more relevant marketing to users. They would like to be able to give us more relevant advertising & let companies contact us directly via Facebook or WhatsApp.



They also gave us an option to opt out and don't allow WhatsApp to share our data. Unfortunately even if we don't allow WhatsApp to share our data they will still be able to share some of our data with Facebook.

Is there any point in opting out and not allow WhatsApp to share our data?

Unfortunately I can't just drop WhatsApp. I did try to delete it a few times last year.

1. Customers called & scolded me & told me that they will take their business elsewhere because I don't use WhatsApp.

2. Immediately after deleting my account, business partners called me to install it back and said that they need to contact me on WhatsApp & not other apps.

Will there be any difference between using WhatsApp and communicating via Facebook wall posting?

My personal opinion is...No...I would expect that anything you do on WhatsApp, will be shared with Facebook, and at Facebook's desecration, and be shared Publicly at some point by Facebook.

My suggestion, since it seems that you have no choice but to use WhatsApp, is make sure that you Only use it for business purposes, and be very careful about sharing any personal information while using WhatsApp.

As I have already mentioned, I don't use Facebook or any of the other Social Networking sites.

I am, however, also very careful not to share any personal information while using company owned email. I won't use company email to make lunch plans, share news stories, ect. Including, even when asked to do so, I refuse to include personal details in my email requests for Time Off, and will only supply the details verbally.

My point of mentioning all of that, is to illustrate how you can still use WhatsApp as a business tool, and be cognizant of not revealing any personal information while using the app.

With that said, I guess it was just a matter of time before Facebook started prodding around to WhatsApp to yield ad revenue. Regardless, people will forget about this and it eventually becomes a money maker so Facebook wins anyway.

Trust me...I get the same BS from all of my friends that harangue me for not having a Facebook account.

Some of my friends actually go so far as to point out that there are several professional companies that actually refuse to hire people without a Facebook or Twitter account, for fear that the applicants are hiding some sort of criminal past.

While, like you, I have nothing to hide either, I personally don't want everyone in the USA or the World to know what brand of shoes I like, how often I eat out, where I go on vacation, etc.
I have no problem with my friends, family, co-workers, club members, fellow college alumni, and acquaintances know that stuff about me, but I don't need some random strangers knowing all of that information about me.

I also don't mind sharing pictures of myself or pictures I take of places, with friends and co-workers, but again, I don't want some stranger in some random place to view my pictures.

One thing I do agree with, that your friends mentioned, is that it is becoming more and more likely that in some point in the near future, people like you and I won't have a choice...and any thing we say or do electronically or in public places, will be made available to everyone.

One example of this happen already to me is, as I stated, I do not and will not have a Facebook account, but according to my friends there are random pictures of me all over different parts of Facebook as a member of a group or team or in public places (like restaurants and dance clubs). I have even been told that my high school yearbook photos are all on Facebook (because the high school I attended has digitized all of the yearbooks and posted them to their Facebook page)

While I have nothing to hide, I have to admit that I don't really like that random people around the world being able to identify me and know what groups I am a member of, teams I played for, and what high school I graduated from.

And there is absolutely nothing I can do about it.

My point is that, I do agree with your friends that, the way things are headed, fairly soon, there will be no privacy left.

Of course there another way of looking at it. I'm pretty sure most people already don't care, and that's expected.

I think because even though WhatsApp have many users, it does not make money. Facebook is just doing what any other company would do, and that is to get money back from their investment.
