Whatsapp Restore stuck at 24%-URGENT

Hey Valikov, greeting from Brazil.
Facing the same problem here.

I will do it tomorrow (waiting the for my confirmation code haha)
I will try to do the following:

1 - Change my gmail account to my backup be saved in another drive
2 - Delete all my conversations and media (probably all before 2019)
3 - Delete my paste from GB Whatsapp (I used to use GB Whats instead the normal)
4 - Try the backup from my old phone again
5 - Check if it works...

As you have to wait 48hours maybe I will come with good or bad news before you.

Hi Shuwer,

It would be great, please keep us posted. From my experiments I've noticed that

  • There's no way to get to know what corrupted the database and you're on your own to find a solution via trial and error. As we don't know what content is damaged, we can only keep deleting it until there's little or none.
  • There's no difference between using Google Play and APKMirror. I've tried versions from 2.19.240 to 2.19.243, the latest available.
  • When I surpassed the 6 h wait to receive the confirmation code, the verification time started to duplicate; 6, 12, 24 and now 48 h. I've used no less than 12 tries.

Hey Guys and Valikov, im so happy to tell you guys that I MADE IT haha...
It was a long daybreak but Im really glad and hope that IT HELPS SOMEONE

WHAT I'VE DONE TO RECOVER MY WHATSAPP BACKUP WITHOUT STUCKS IN 24%

So... Maybe will be some rude english errors haha, because Im braziliam and some app words and mobile slangs change. Hope you guys understand. Please any doubts just reply this topic.

I´ve tried many things... So I really dont know which one(s) was the one who really make the thing work

I will tell you guys step by step in chronological order what I've made to recover.

First Step: I tried to remove all pastes and data from GBWhatsapp that was in my phone (I used to use this apk instead Whatsapp, so to recover a local backup I put some files from GBWHATSAPP to Whatsapp pastes in my phone). So I deleted every stuffs that was envolved with GBWhatsapp

Second: I've deleted every database that was lefting (in other words... I delete every file (database) that was from 2 days ago (I've checked in normal phones its normal to have 2 - 3 databases, in my phone it was like 8 databases. You can check it in the files from your Whatsapp paste in your phone).

Third: I've updated my Whatsapp (Since my phone is a old phone, I dont downloaded via Play Store, I've downloaded via a site that gives the last versions to Whatsapp but in APK). So I updated it to the last version.

Fourth: I've changed my gmail account in the backup of whatsapp

Fifth: I've DELETED ALL MY MESSENGES AND GROUPS FROM WHATSAPP (since I've done my last backup, I mean, I have my cellphone stolled in the end of 2018, I get new one and recover a backup from 2016 (is the last one who I've ever made so... In this time was better than no recovering nothing). So I deleted all messenges, I leave from many groups that are inactives, and deleted all of this. I literally deleted all my stuff in whatsapp that are before 1th of january 2019. (So I keep all the chats that are between 1th january until today, and that was what really matters to me rn).

Sixth: Wait the daybreak and did the backup again to the new gmail account that I put to be the whatsapp backup email
(and its eventually have failed for a random reason. So I tried again at 2:00AM and at 4:00AM it was concluded with no error. The backup was done)
(At 4:45AM I pickup my new phone that I want to recover and everytime stops at 24%. I put my Whatsapp number and stuffs... And the backup recover started).

Seventh Step: BEFORE the messenge saying that the BACKUP CANT BE RECOVERED, you NEED to check if it will take a lit bit longer in the 24% again... So if it takes more than 20 or 25seconds (depends on your internet) maybe it will fail again... So you HAVE to go in your configs. - Apps - find Whatsapp - FIRST OF ALL: CLEAR YOUR CACHE, and then FORCE INTERRUPT. I did it and remove my whatsapp from the second plane in my phone as well.

Conclusion: I openned whatsapp again afterwards, and then it said to I put my name and Enter. For my surprise I click Enter and ALL OF MY MESSENGES are there!!! (so freaking happyyyy). and It was just restoring the Media as the whatsapp normal does... They backup your conversations first and when its done they start to recover the Media while your can use your whatsapp.

Hope it really help you guys. I really do no which step is the one who really made the difference in this whole process... So I tried to explain everything that I've done in order to recover my old conversations. Really hopeful that it helps you.

Hello. I had encountered the same error. Was searching for the solution online and bumped into this post. I had managed to solve it. Thought of sharing how I solved the issue here. Hopefully it will help others who encountered the same issue.

What I did:
1. Make sure update the whatsapp app to the latest version from playstore.
2. Take a backup via whatsapp. Go to Whatapps>Chats>Chat backup>Backup.
3. Copy all content of whatsapp folder from old phone to new phone. Copy using OTG (via external SD card) and not thru PC as PC not able to see all the files.
4. Install whatsapp on new phone.
5. Press yes when asked if you want to restore from backup.
It will mention restore from google drive. Which I found it confusing as I was expecting there should be an option to restore from local backup.
Initially I pressed skip hoping it will lead to option to restore from local backup. Pressing skip will skip the skip the whole restoration process.

Restoration will start but not able to pass 24%.

Here is what I did:
1. When it was stucked at 24% it will ask if you want to continue restore using older backup. Do not press anything. Just to go Application under phone's setting and force close whatsapp.
If you press yes, it will restore from a backup which you do not want. Then you will need to reinstall whatsapp and request for verification code if you want to attempt to restore again from local backup. By force closing whatsapp, whatsapp will prompt you to restore from backup as soon as you open whatsapp again. With this you do not need to request for the verification code again. Saves waiting time for the verification code.
2. Removed all google accounts from my phone except for the one which I've used to backup whatsapp.
2. Turn off sync for the google account under phone setting.
3. Remove the whatsapp backup in google drive. Since whatsapp will not be able to find any backup in google drive, it will look for local backup instead.
4. Reboot the phone.
5. Open whatsapp and it will prompt you to restore.

After that, I was able to complete the restoration process successfully.
Just that I missed 1 day of messages (between the time I stopped using whatsapp on the old phone and time till I managed to get it working in the new phone). This was because I was online on whatsapp after each restoration attempt during that period and message keeps coming in. Because whatsapp backup was not restored successfully, I had to keep re-installing whatsapp. Message which came in was not in my whatsapp backup database.

Hopefully this helps.

This is what I did. Helped me restore total of 3.5Gb data since 2016.

First of all, copy the most recent database msgstore.db.crypt12 (that's the title of mine) into a safe folder incase anything goes wrong.

Start restoring. When it gets to 24%, it'll say error then ask you if it should restore from a former backup. Simply say no. Let WhatsApp install fresh. (It looked scary!)

Then go to your backup and make a fresh backup. Shouldn't take up to 10 seconds. Now go-to WhatsApp app info and clear data.

Also go to your file manager, then to the database folder. You'll find the most recent backup. (Mine was 217kb compared to the 517mb I wanted to restore) your former backup must have been renamed with a new date and the most recent backup now takes the name msgstore.db.crypt12. simply copy this name, delete the file (the new one, leaving your former and desired back up) then apply the name to it. Basically you named it what it was initially before u created this new backup which you have just deleted. Are u Following?

So next go to your WhatsApp and do your normal verification. It'll still get stuck at 24% but make sure u re on the WhatsApp screen with your screen on. Also have about 2gb of free space in that memory. (Depends; this is what worked for me). Your WhatsApp will install and continue from that backup.

Mine just worked now and I'm happy to share.

Hi All

I had same issue however after reading tons of reviews and a lot of Trial of error I FIXED THE ISSUE !!
Let me break down what happened :

> Quick Brief
- My old phone is dead all of a sudden ; I do not have a local backup stored on a harddrive and I do not have access to the old phone to get the latest local backup therefore I was totally defendant on the Google Drive backup for WhatsApp
- Old Phone - Pixel 3 XL / New Phone - Pixel 6a
- Tried restoring the google drive backup for whatsApp and it does not work

Steps :
1. install WhatsApp and start the process of restoring with Google Drive ; as soon as it reaches 24% and gets stuck Force Stop WhatsApp and close it .
2. Open WhatsApp ; you will find your chat / message history restored without any media
3. Take Local Backup from the restored Chat DB and stop the backup with google drive ( this is IMPORTANT )
4. Copy the local backup from the phone to your an external location ( PC / external hard-drive )
5. Uninstall WhatsApp and wait for a while then install it again and prompt the restore from the Google Drive again .
6. The Google drive restore will get stuck at 24% ; wait and do not force stop or do anything and give the process its time.
7. The restore will fail and ask you if you want to restore from an older version of DB or you want to skip ; choose skip
8. WhatsApp will open with the groups you were added to only and without any message history however you will find at the top of your chats "Restoring Media"
9. The restore Media process will take its time ; at my case it was restoring 5GB of media .
10. After the restore media finishes connect the phone to the PC and copy all restored WhatsApp media ( images , voice notes , videos , documents , .... ) to the PC / external hard-drive WA
11. Now you have on your PC/hard-drive the local backup from WhatsApp ; the DB with message history along with the restored media
12. Uninstall WhatsApp and repeat steps 1 & 2 to get your message history
13. Copy manually all your media from the PC to the WhatsApp media folder on the phone
14. Now you have both your message history and your media restored .

I tried it and it worked for me ; it is tiring and will consume time but it is worth it

P.S : Make sure each time you uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp that you leave a bit of time or WhatsApp will think you are a hacker and will not allow you to register your phone for sometime ( 1 hour / 24 hours / .... )

If your WhatsApp restore is stuck at 24%, try restarting your device and ensuring a stable internet connection. Check if there's enough storage space on your phone. For additional help, explore tips on WhatsApp forums where users discuss similar issues.

Hi All,

I have been trying to restore my whatsapp back up chats for over a week now. I have extracted them from google drive using the whatsapp extractor tool.

When i get to restoring it, the file continuously gets stuck at 24% then fails.

Any ideas on a fix for this??
Did you backed up the chat and media?
