I ordered a Samsung MHL adapter which connects the Note 2 to the TV via HDMI.

when connected to TV via HDMI cable, does the Note 2's screen stay on?

To the best of my knowledge, every phone's screen will remain on while using MHL to stream to the TV. Turning off the screen will stop the connection to the TV. My solution to this was to crank down the brightness all the way and put a video game case on top of the device. Not ideal, but worked.

Mine does, but to use the adapter i have, the phone is effectively plugged into a power supply so it is not a huge deal power wise.
