I know it's mostly fake, but Moto still has to keep it in line with their phones, otherwise it's like movie theater popcorn prices where you can have a small for $4, or quadruple the amount for $5. Everbody knows the small doesn't actually cost them $4.The off contract price is mostly a lie, be aware of this. For example, look at the iPhone 4 and the iPod Touch 4th Gen. The only real differences between them are cell phone radio and cameras. A new 16gb iPod touch costs $299. A new 16gb iPhone costs $599, and I know the difference in parts doesn't cost $300. It is a little gimmick done by cell phone companies and manufacturers to "encourage" you into contracts.
Also, motorola knows their main competition with the wifi only device is the iPad 32gb which costs $599. My bet is that the Xoom wifi only will clock in at $549-599. I would be happily surprised by $499 or lower.
It's really hard to compare pricing structure to Apple, since they do things totally different than everyone else. You'll never see an Apple product with an AT&T or Verizon logo on the iPhone or iPad.
Anyway, I still say you won't see a Wi-Fi only Xoom for sale in the US before July at the absolute earliest. It wouldn't make any sense for Verizon to allow it, and obviously they're the ones who negotiated exclusivity for the Xoom.
