When would a phone need a new motherboard?

So, I have a new phone that has become bricked right out of the box. After the phone attempted to update, it just stayed frozen on the logo. I've asked about this earlier, but I took it to a nearby repair shop and they told me that it was just a simple fix and now they're saying it needs a whole new motherboard because it is fried. I haven't paid for that fix yet but they said it would be 150. So far they've charged 15 for diagnostics and they said it would be 85 for just simple fix/recovery yesterday. After some research, there's been mixed reviews about the place and I'm just wondering if it's really worth paying that much for a new defective phone or if it's better to just buy a new one.

I'm sorry, I don't think we can second guess a repair shop nor comment on how good or bad they may be. You would have to make the decision whether to repair it or buy a new one.
