Where are theContacts groups on Lollipop 5.1?

On my laptop my contacts are all assigned to various groups.On Kit Kat 4.x on my Moto G v1, I could go to a group then scroll the contacts in that group. I was forced upgraded to Lollipop, and I can no longer find the groups on my Moto G. How do I get to them?

There is no workaround, because many times I need to scroll through a sub-list of names that I do not have committed to memory.

Are you talking about Google Contacts groups? This is not implemented well in the Contacts app. To see the contact groups, you have to tap Menu>Contacts to Display>Customize, then pick the groups there. The Gmail app also doesn't have a native way to send a group email--I use Group Share for Gmail.
